McGregor's Next Fight Confirmed For June 29 Against Chandler

Conor McGregor’s next fight will be against Michael Chandler during International Fight Week in Las Vegas on June 29, 2024.

McGregor has mentioned his return for some time. His loss to Dustin Poirier in 2021 at UFC 264 kept him out of the octagon for over two years. A severe leg injury raised doubts over whether McGregor would ever set foot in the octagon again. He was on course to make a return in 2023, but he faced issues with his USADA enrollment.

Under those rules, fighters must provide two negative samples over a period of six months before they can compete. He failed to do that in the relevant timeline, which prevented a return in 2023. After that, McGregor entered the testing pool, hoping to return at UFC 300. Dana White dismissed that, as a return for the summer was mentioned.

White On McGregor’s Return

‘He’s good, he’s ready. He wants to [fight]. He’s got to sit out for the six months to get back into the drug-testing pool. So realistically… could be looking at him next summer,” White said

But the fighter became more frustrated as the talk of his return died down. White reassured fans that McGregor’s future would be ‘figured out’ soon. But the Irishman lost his cool during his appearance at the Day of Reckoning boxing card in Saudi. McGregor made it clear that he was angered by the delay.

McGregor’s Frustration

“I was supposed to be back in April, I was supposed to be back in April. It was supposed to be December. They’ve never treated anyone, no one’s ever been treated [like this]. For all the figures I’ve brought in this game, I sell more than all of them combined, yeah? I sell more than every one of them combined.

“No one in the history of the fight game’s ever been treated the way I’m getting treated at this minute, yeah Through what I came through to what I bring, they f—ing should open floodgates for me, yeah?” he continued to rage. “And I’m waiting. I’m waiting and I’m waiting. My patience is wearing thin on me waiting,” McGregor stated

McGregor’s Announcement

Now those issues have been resolved. In the video above, McGregor is holding a wine glass as he confirmed the news of his return.

“Ladies and gentlemen, a Happy New Year to you all. I’d like to announce the return date for myself, the ‘Notorious’ Conor McGregor, the greatest comeback of all time will take place in Las Vegas for International Fight Week, June the 29th… and the opponent, Michael Chandler. And the weight, Mr. Chandler, 185 pounds,” McGregor

In response, Chandler had this to say.

Both fighters have plenty to prove moving forward. Will McGregor be the same fighter, given that he has been away from the sport with a career-threatening injury? At the same time, Chandler has not fought in over a year since his loss to Poirier. The fight will define who comes out best since they were rival coaches on the TUF 31 series.
