In the latest MMA and boxing news, Conor McGregor has called out Floyd Mayweather Jr. for a rematch.
The pair faced each other all the way back in 2017 as McGregor was stopped in the tenth round on his boxing debut. Despite coming out second best, the Irishman made a reported $100 million from the bout.
The win took Mayweather’s unbeaten record to 50-0 as McGregor was left to deal with the defeat before returning back to the UFC.
But after looking back on the fight, McGregor shared some footage of Mayweather’s win over the undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez.
And in doing so, he praised Mayweather’s performance over Alvarez by highlighting how he had done better than the Mexican when he faced ‘TBE.’
McGregor On A Mayweather Rematch
“One of the greatest performances in Professional Boxing this was. I landed more shots on Floyd than Canelo. I’d love another go,” McGregor stated
And by the looks of it, the statistics do back that up. McGregor landed 111 times on Mayweather compared to Canelo’s 117 punches. However, McGregor connected with 26 percent of his shots while Canelo managed just 22 percent.
Those comments got the attention of Alvarez, who fired back to dismisses the threat posed by McGregor as both fighters traded verbals shots at each other.
McGregor And Canelo
“I just need one hand with you and I don’t need to throw so many punches,” Canelo said
“Saul you uncooked chicken, I’ll stomp the ligaments out of your knee joint. I don’t even need hands to end you, I’ll kick you raw pink, leave you looking like you were left out in the sun too long haha freckle arse. I will see you and we will see. Canelo is a cornflake, no sugar,” McGregor stated
Outside of that, McGregor’s main focus appears to be the octagon. The two-weight world champion recently enrolled into USADA testing as the fighter could make his comeback to the cage in 2024.
The Notorious has been absent ever since he broke his leg at UFC 264 during his loss to Dustin Poirier. Although a bout with Michael Chandler is likely, if McGregor can secure a win on his return, then a boxing bout could be on the horizon. Time will tell.
McGregor’s Sexual Assault Allegations
Elsewhere, Conor McGregor will not face any charges in relation to his allegations of sexual assault that occurred in June.
Reports indicate that McGregor attended a NBA Finals game in Miami in order to undertake a skit where he punched the team’s mascot.
And according to TMZ Sports, a woman claimed she had been sexually assaulted in the men’s bathroom. It is alleged that security (from the NBA and Miami Heat) placed the woman and her friend in the bathroom.
It was claimed that they were not allowed to leave, which is when McGregor was deemed to have “shoved his tongue in the victim’s mouth and aggressively kissed her.” McGregor denied the claims, which caused the UFC and Miami Heat to respond.
“The organization is aware of the recent allegations regarding Conor McGregor and will continue to gather additional details regarding the incident. UFC will allow the legal process to play out before making any additional statements,” the UFC
“We are aware of the allegations and are conducting a full investigation. Pending the outcome of the investigation, we will withhold further comment,” Miami Heat
But now that the investigation is over, McGregor’s name has been cleared. The prosecution confirmed that there was “insufficient evidence, contradicting and/or no corroborating witnesses,” in order to hold McGregor to account.
In addition, prosecutors also claimed that the woman had demanded to know how McGregor would pursue things if she pressed charges, particularly as to whether there would be any settlement.
But now that the case is over, McGregor can turn his attention towards getting back to the octagon. And that is the most important thing to remember moving forward.
