McGregor Rejected Road House Sequel – ‘I Just Can’t’
Conor McGregor did not sign on for a Road House sequel because he was uncertain whether the filming would conflict with his fight preparations.
McGregor made his acting debut when he featured in the Hollywood blockbuster with Jake Gyllenhaal. McGregor impressed Gyllenhaal with how he was willing to learn the ropes. It was his humility that took Gyllenhaal by surprise. Jake also recalled how McGregor accidentally hit him during a choreographed fight scene. The film went down a treat with the fans. It was released on March 21 via Amazon Prime Video. Within the first two weeks, 50 million people watched the film, setting a new streaming record for Amazon Prime Video. Since then, approximately 80 million people have watched it.
McGregor’s Success
“The groundbreaking, successful debut of Road House is a testament to the hard work and commitment from the entire Road House filmmaking team and the film’s cast led by the phenomenal Jake Gyllenhaal. The world is absolutely loving this entertaining, action-packed ride anchored by the performances of [many].
“Jake, Conor McGregor, Daniela Melchior, Darren Barnet, Billy Magnussen, Jessica Williams, Lukas Gage, Arturo Castro, JD Pardo, and the rest of our stellar cast. It’s great to see the film taking off with both fans of the iconic original as well as a huge turnout from new audiences. This incredible film is really giving everyone something to talk about, and we couldn’t be more proud,” Jennifer Salke (Amazon MGM Studios)
McGregor gave conflicting comments about acting again. He admitted that he rejected several roles before taking the Road House film. He was open to making more films, saying he could follow in the footsteps of someone like Sylvester Stallone. The film earned McGregor $5 million. This was the highest someone had received for a debut film project. Gyllenhaal has signed for another film. McGregor, though, is unlikely due to potential conflicts with his fights.
McGregor’s Acting
He returns to the UFC on June 29 at UFC 303 against Michael Chandler. McGregor has three losses in his last four fights, the latest against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in 2021. The Irishman suffered a potential career-threatening injury as there are doubts he will ever return to his best. But since McGregor has further plans to fight again this year, including at the The Sphere in Las Vegas, his focus is on fighting, not acting.
“They’re at the table, they wanted me to go to New York City for some sort of mega announcement with me and Gyllenhaal and this, that and the other and they were coming forward and I was like look, I don’t, I’m training, I’m focused on the fight, I don’t know whether I’m going to do it again and I appreciate the offer and they asked and I just kind of left it on ice at the minute.
“And then they went ahead and announced the sequel, which I’m very excited about, I’m very happy for everyone involved. When will it be? What time? There’s loads of things that weren’t getting answered and I was like I don’t know, I just can’t commit so I have June 29 and man, I’m going on a…tear. God willing, I’m going on a tear here [in the UFC],” McGregor said
