Mayweather Attends AEW’s ‘Double Or Nothing’

Floyd Mayweather attended AEW’s ‘Double or Nothing’ at the MGM Grand on May 26.

The former welterweight champion was ringside, making it the first time he had been at an AEW event. Mayweather is known for being a big fan of WWE, having famously made an appearance in 2008 at Raw SmackDown ECW. That is when Mayweather got in the ring and punched Big Show, who appeared to have a broken nose. Big Show praised Mayweather for the effort he had put into making the event such a spectacle.

“I remember he peeked in the dressing room, when he later returned, I said ‘man, good job’. Then he relaxed. I think he got it and he was tremendous professionally to work with, because he is a showman and he understands the showmanship part of it. At that time, the angle was so much fun because it’s really hard to do that Boxer vs. Wrestler angle that’s been done,” Big Show said

Mayweather Attends

This time around, Mayweather was enjoying the wrestling. Swerve Strickland had just retained his AEW World Championship at Double or Nothing, with a win over Christian Cage. After the event ended, Strickland brought the belt to the crowd as he took a photo with Mayweather. Strickland admitted he had been trying to get Mayweather to attend.

“Floyd has been a friend of ours. My man [rapper] Flash Garments over here, he gets a free pass every time he comes to All Elite Wrestling. Because, once again, we’re here to grow this company. We’re here to bring something to All Elite Wrestling, not just take. We want to give — like, if we got opportunities, if we have connections, we’re going to bring them here every single time. And we want to blow this place up and we want to be the catalyst of it.

“So that’s how Floyd came through. We’ve actually been talking to Floyd for like two years now. His whole family, trying to have him come through every time we’re in Vegas. Finally, he was like, ‘All right, this is the day. We’re pulling up.’ So he pulled up, made it to the match. We pulled out a banger in front of him. He’s like, ‘I’m in, I’m in.’ We might have Money Team invested in this whole thing,” Strickland stated

Mayweather’s Return

Mayweather has hinted that he could be back in the ring soon. He teased an exhibition with reports he could face Victor Ortiz. Mayweather and Ortiz faced each other in a controversial bout. Mayweather stopped Ortiz, who failed to protect himself after they touched gloves following an Ortiz headbutt.

That fight was shut down after suggestions there would be a rematch against John Gotti III instead. But during a presser for what would have been the announcement, Mayweather did not turn up. But the boxer has hinted again that he will be boxing in August. His appearance at AEW will only help build up the promo for an upcoming fight.
