Malignaggi Rips Tank’s Resume – ’30-Years-Old, He’s Done Nothing’

Paulie Malignaggi has ripped Gervonta Davis, saying the boxer has not accomplished anything.
His comments were made in the aftermath of Davis’ majority draw with Lamont Roach Jr. Tank survived a big scare to remain undefeated, but in truth, he was lucky to get away without a loss. Davis took a knee in the ninth round before going to his corner to wipe some grease from his face. The referee failed to give it as a knockdown, preventing Roach from getting the decision on two cards. The result produced an uproar from the boxing community, with many feeling Roach had been robbed. It also called into question Tank’s skills.
He has been accused of not facing the biggest names in his career. Fights against Shakur Stevenson, Teofimo Lopez, Devin Haney and Keyshawn Davis are some that have been mentioned. But Tank’s biggest fight so far has been against Ryan Garcia. The latter is really a 147 fighter who took the fight at a 136-pound catchweight.
Garcia also had to abide by a ten-pound rehydration clause, as he was weight-drained. Tank has also imposed rehydration clauses on other fighters, such as Mario Barrios, when he moved up to 140. Barrios now fights at 147 and is the WBC Welterweight Champion, meaning he was not at his best when he faced Davis. Malignaggi has now taken things a step further by bashing his resume.
Malignaggi On Davis
“Steve Willis was supposed to count that as a knockdown, and if he counts that as a knockdown, Lamont Roach wins by one point on two scorecards. There are at least six or seven lightweights better than Lamont Roach. It’s not like he went out of a weak division to go and pick Lamont Roach for this fight. He went and got Lamont Roach as a cherry pick. It makes you wonder, ‘Is he [Gervonta] that guy? He has no resume to speak of.
“This is a guy that’s 30-years-old and speaks like he’s accomplished what Muhammad Ali has accomplished, talking about how he’s going to retire because he’s done everything. He’s actually done nothing. This guy has never chased a top guy in his weight class. Has he ever had a fight where you said, ‘That’s the best guy in the weight class and Gervonta Davis went and chased him and made it.’ Shakur Stevenson, even with injured hands, probably would have beat him tonight. Keyshawn Davis would have beat him for sure. Edwin De Los Santos would have beat him tonight,” Malignaggi said
Davis did say prior to this fight that he would retire this year with three more fights. But that has now changed, stating he has four more bouts left. Davis’ rematch with Roach is not certain, as the latter could turn his attention to facing Shakur Stevenson. That will only reinforce claims that Tank faces fighters who are not at their peak. Roach gave Davis his hardest fight and had won on most people’s cards, only for the judges to prevent the decision. Unless Davis faces the big names and rematches Roach, the jury will still be out.
