Lauren Price Backs Mayer To Beat Ryan; Has Eyes On Undisputed

Lauren Price has given her take on Mikaela Mayer vs. Sandy Ryan as the pair rematch this weekend.

Mayer defends her WBO Welterweight Title, having beaten Ryan for it in their first fight. The first fight was marred by controversy after Mayer alleged that Ryan had taken her trainer. Meanwhile, Ryan hit back with accusations that Mayer was involved in an incident that resulted in Ryan getting paint thrown at her outside of her New York City fight hotel.

Mayer denied anything of the sort, as she put the controversy behind her to come out with a majority decision win. Price holds the other three belts in the division. Price dominated Natasha Jonas to add the WBC and IBF belts to her WBA title. The win was so one-sided that Jonas suggested that she may retire from the sport. The 40-year-old was not competitive, suggesting the torch had been passed from her to Price.

“I think emotions are running high right now and Joe has been asking me to retire for a very long time. I actually enjoy sitting next to you Andy (Scott), Anna (Woolhouse) and Johnny (Nelson) and commentating so maybe we look at that afterwards. “But now I’ll go home and spend time with my daughter,” Jonas stated

Jonas Reacts

That has set the narrative for an undisputed fight, something Price wants.

“Mayer and Jonas had a close fight, Ryan and [former world champion] Jessica McCaskill did too, you saw what I did to both. I believe I’m the best and we keep climbing that ladder, not being cocky, that’s where my confidence comes from,” Price said

Price has looked at the Mayer-Ryan match-up and backed Mikaela to come out on top. She mentioned how Mayer is better on the inside, which would allow her to impose her game. Mayer is the physically stronger fighter, although Price considers Ryan the better boxer. Ryan will take heart from the first fight, having pushed Mayer all the way before she lost a majority decision. Price set her sights on getting the winner, which she feels will be Mayer.

“Big fights have to happen, it’s what we want. We’ll go over to Vegas in a couple weeks, let’s make sure it happens. Mikaela said she wants to become undisputed and that’s what makes sense so hopefully Lauren hasn’t done too much to scare everyone else off, we can get it on. It’s a great, close fight but I’d say Mayer.” Why? “I just think Sandy sometimes loves to fight, she’s a better boxer but you can draw her in and Mayer is probably better on the inside, yeah,” Price said
