Kostya Tszyu Urges Son Tim To Train In Russia After His Terrible Form - 'Have Time In Discomfort'

Tim Tszyu’s father, Kostya Tszyu, wants his son to train in Russia following his poor run of form.

Tsyzu had a terrible 2024, having failed to win a single fight. Tim entered the year as the WBO Junior Middleweight Champion. He was also undefeated, looking to unify against Sebastian Fundora. He was defending his WBO belt while the WBC title was up for grabs. The fight started well, with Tszyu in the lead. But it all changed when he suffered an accidental cut over his hairline. His corner did not stop the fight.

Tszyu struggled with his vision and lost a split decision. The Australian should have taken some time off before heading into his next bout. But he jumped into the ring around six months later against the Russian Bakhram Murtazaliev. The latter was the IBF Junior Middleweight Champion. While Tim had the chance to win a world title, the gulf in class showed. The Russian dropped Tsyzu four times before getting the stoppage. That has left Tszyu with a major rebuilding job. He has said he wants to come back stronger this year.

Tszyu’s Aim

“2024 a year of adversity. Considered myself a throwback fighter, I didn’t care who I had in front of me, I was willing to take any one on. Things don’t always go to script.. but that’s the best thing about boxing. What doesn’t kill you, only makes you stronger. Appreciate everyone’s support. Sorry that I let a lot down… I like to punch on with the very best. And that’s exactly what I’ll keep doing. And that’s punching on with whoever. Hope everyone has a happy and prosperous New Year. 2025 is the year we all become GREAT. In whatever we do. Chase greatness and never stop believing!! See you all very soon,” Tszyu said

He could face a lower-ranked fighter in his next fight. But that risks pushing his career back further if he does not come through with a comprehensive win. Another alternative is to target a bigger name that has not been active. Jermell Charlo is the perfect opponent. They were meant to fight in 2023. But Charlo withdrew with a hand injury.

Charlo then faced Canelo Alvarez at 168 instead and lost a one-sided unanimous decision. He has, however, said that he wants to box in 2025. A fight with Tszyu could be the perfect fight, as Tim may be vulnerable. Meanwhile, Tszyu could get Charlo when he has not been active. But before anything happens next, Kostya has invited his son to train in Russia. That could be the difference in getting guidance from a former world champion.

“I’ve already put the offer out. Obviously they’re big boys now – and can make their own decisions – but I would love to take them both to Russia, take them into camp. I want to put them on the ground and give them a hard routine. The simple stuff. Good but not flashy. Have them spend some time in discomfort. Because sometimes being in a comfort zone, it gives you no advantage…..sometimes it’s against you,” Kostya said
