Keyshawn Davis Targets Isaac Cruz - 'I'm A Dawg'

Keyshawn Davis wants to box Isaac Cruz moving forward.

Davis’ comments come ahead of his fight with Denys Berinchyk on February 14. This is Davis’ biggest fight, meaning he cannot afford to overlook his man. A win makes him the WBO Lightweight Champion, earning him his first world title. A victory would set up a huge unification at 135. He could box the WBA Lightweight Champion Gervonta Davis. There is also the possibility of facing the IBF Lightweight Champion Vasiliy Lomachenko. Keyshawn has ruled out a fight with the WBC Lightweight Champion Shakur Stevenson since they are close friends. The decision to target Cruz raises several points.

Cruz currently boxes at 140 pounds. He is the former WBA Junior Welterweight Champion. His stock rose massively when he stopped Rolando Romero to become the champion. But he lost the title in his next fight, coming out second best to Jose Valenzuela. He recovered to beat Angel Fierro in his last bout. Keyshawn has previously said he is much bigger than 135, even stating that he could go to 147.

That may give a hint over his future moving forward. There are huge fights out there for him at the higher-weight classes. Bouts against Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia and Teofimo Lopez are just some of the names that could get in the ring with him. There is also the potential to face the other big names at 147. Future fights with Jaron Ennis or Mario Barrios may also be eyed if Keyshawn made 147. Either way, he has said his future at 135 pounds will not be for too long.

Keyshawn’s Future

“I don’t have to stay at 135. I’m bigger than Shakur. Shakur probably peeks at 135. My peak is at 147. This is just the beginning. 135 is just the beginning. There are fights out there. I don’t have to fight Shakur, but I would love to unify after I beat Berinchyk with one of the champions. We’ll see. I want to fight. I’m the young gunner.

“I want to fight everybody [except Andy Cruz]. After I get my belt, of course, I want to unify with one of the champions, except for Stevenson. I’m not going to be at 135 for too much longer. As long as I want to be here. I weight 144 right now. I’m not really a 140-pounder, for real, but I got the size and strength to do that. I Can Fight At 147 Now,” Keyshawn said

Alternatively, Cruz could come back down to 135. The Mexican could have the chance to become a two-weight world champion if Keyshawn were to get the WBO belt. Cruz’s only loss at 135 pounds came against Gervonta Davis. But he managed to last the distance against Tank, earning lots of praise. There were question marks over how much of that was due to Davis since he admitted to injuring his hand during the fight. But a win over Keyshawn would be the biggest of his career. Keyshawn wanted to make that bout.
