Kambosos Sizes Up Wyllie In Final Presser – ‘This Is Not A Happy Ending’

George Kambosos Jr. and Jake Wyllie had their final presser ahead of junior welterweight clash this weekend.
Kambosos had a last-minute change of opponent after Daud Yordan withdrew from the fight with an illness. He enters the fight with a loss against Vasiliy Lomachenko, missing out on the vacant IBF Lightweight Title. Three defeats out of his last four mean the pressure is on Kambosos to perform in his first fight at 140.
It is also his first fight with Matchroom Boxing, knowing a win sets up bigger potential fights against Teomfio Lopez, Richardson Hitchins, or Liam Paro. Wyllie is capable of stopping anyone at any moment. He is currently 16-1-0, with 15 victories coming by way of knockout. He faces his fellow Australian in front of a home crowd, knowing a win propels his career to a whole new level.
Presser
“Obviously first, it’s great to be back home in Sydney. Big fight here. Big buzz in the city…This is an extremely important fight and obviously yeah, we had a certain opponent [before], but that’s boxing. You always got to be ready for the unexpected and for us we just adapt. We’ve been through so many scenarios. We’ve been through so many experiences at the championship level. At the biggest level in the game. So, one guy’s out? Who’s the next guy? And of course respect to Jake [Wyllie] jumping in. His style was suited. We said ok. Give him the shot.
“Respect to Jake for jumping in. His style was suited. We said, ‘OK, give him the shot.’ Young kid, respectful, humble kid, give him his ‘Rocky’ story. But like I’ve said, don’t get it twisted: This is not a happy ending. There’s a difference between fighting domestic level and having the Australian title and fighting at the level I’ve been fighting at,” Kambosos
Further Reaction
“Man, it’s huge. We prepared to come down here for sparring for my fight that was to be in a couple of weeks time. My Luke [Meldon] and I, we had booked tickets to come and watch George [Kambosos Jr.] and as it is, here we are fighting him.
“It was about quarter past nine on Sunday night and I was half asleep – well, I was asleep – and I sort of rolled over and thought ‘jeez, who’s calling me this late’ and it was my manager and I thought ‘I better call him back’ and there it was. He said ‘mate, George Kambosos’ opponent’s out.’ He’s like ‘you willing to step up and take this on?’ And without anyhesitation I said ‘yes, my word I am.’ And I could not sleep for the rest of the night. I’m so excited,” Wyllie said
“There are question marks about George Kambosos. I mean, he still owns, really, Australia’s greatest-ever victory, I think, on the road against Teofimo Lopez. [But] there’s a feeling here in Sydney: ‘Ah, Kambosos has been beat a few times. When you’re fighting Haney and Loma, if you get beat, you can come again. You get beat by Jake Wyllie on Saturday, there’s nowhere to go,” Eddie Hearn said
