Joshua Wants Fury Next - 'It Makes Me Hungry'

Anthony Joshua’s plan is to fight Tyson Fury this year in a mega domestic clash.

Joshua is targeting a return in the summer following his last fight against Daniel Dubois. AJ suffered a fifth-round stoppage loss after he was sent to the canvas three times. The defeat ended his hopes of becoming a three-time world champion, as he failed to secure the IBF Heavyweight Title. The result also meant he missed out on an undisputed fight, as he would have been in the position to face the winner of Fury and Oleksandr Usyk. Meanwhile, Fury experienced another defeat at the hands of Usyk, losing via a unanimous decision.

That was his second consecutive loss as question marks remain over whether The Gypsy King will continue boxing. Fury earned over $100 million for the two Usyk fights, meaning his financial future is secure. But a Joshua fight is still the biggest bout out there for him from a commercial point of view. It could easily sell out in Saudi Arabia and Wembley Stadium in the UK. They had previously signed a deal to face each other. But Fury’s contract with Wilder meant he had to take the rematch instead, as the fight never happened.

Eddie Hearn and Frank Warren are now working closely together with the help of Saudis, meaning that any stumbling blocks that may have existed will now have been removed. The two fighters are also more matched commercially following their recent losses. They have both come unstuck against Usyk, meaning that the winner will become the better heavyweight out of the two.Fury was always seen as the leading heavyweight. But their losses to Usyk puts more pressure on the fight. The fight is not as big as it would have been when the two boxers were at their peak. But this was the fight that Joshua wanted moving forward.

“2025, I am targeting Tyson Fury,” Joshua said

The Future

But there is also the opportunity to run things back with Dubois. Joshua has previously said that he would like to avenge that defeat. There were talks over the Dubois rematch. But Dubois will now take on Joseph Parker in a defense of his IBF Heavyweight Title. They face off on February 22. A win for Dubois will put him in a mandatory position to face Usyk for undisputed. But Joshua still has plans to set the Dubois loss right, saying he learnt a lot from the defeat.

“[The loss] makes me hungry, makes me want to work harder. Time is of the essence; time is limited, so I just want to put in more work. When I look back, I believe I could have done more in 2024. I have another chance in 2025 to do more, and I am going to make sure I take every opportunity that comes my way. I should have won, but I didn’t, and I am going to go again,” Joshua added
