Jonas Targets History With Taylor & Mayer Fights – ‘Going To End Up Undisputed’

Natasha Jonas is targeting historic fights against Katie Taylor and Mikaela Mayer before she retires.
Jonas is coming off a win against Ivana Habazin, which helped her unify the welterweight division as she secured the IBF and WBC titles. She is now scheduled to face the WBA champion Lauren Price in her next fight on March 7. A win over Price would leave Jonas with just the WBO belt missing, which Mayer currently holds. Jonas has already faced Mayer this year, winning a controversial split decision. Many felt Mayer had been robbed of a win. Jonas has also already faced Taylor previously, losing via a unanimous decision.
Since then, Taylor has become undisputed in two weight classes. She conquered the 135 and 140-pound divisions. Taylor is coming off a second win against Amanda Serrano, setting up the narrative for a trilogy. However, there is a scenario where Jonas could become undisputed at 147, leaving Taylor with a chance to make history. Claressa Shields has become undisputed in three weight classes at 154, 160 and 168. Taylor could join that club. Jonas was clear that she would retire if she did not want to pursue those big bouts.
Jonas Reacts
“Either way, you’re going to end up undisputed, and you bow out. She’s [Taylor] beat me twice – I just want one win. And I believe I’m a better boxer than the last time we fought. I also believe that the time we fought was behind closed doors, it was Covid times and we deserve to have a crowd. I don’t believe I’ve got anything else to prove after that,” Jonas said
But before she can consider that, Jonas must beat Price. The latter is undefeated, with an 8-0 record. She defeated Bexcy Mateus in her last fight to defend her WBA belt. Price is seen as the future of the welterweight division. She is known for her physical advantages and is significantly younger. Price is 30, while Jonas is 40.
Price’s Aim
That youth could prove a difference if the fight goes into the latter rounds. But Jonas is far more experienced, making this a tantalizing fight. Price has ideas of disrupting Jonas’ plans. Price knows she can become one of the biggest female boxers in England with a historic win. That was her aim moving forward, come fight night.
“I’m excited to headline such a huge occasion. I have a lot of respect for Natasha Jonas and what she has achieved in the sport, but she has the belts that I want. When I turned professional after becoming Olympic champion, I wanted to create greatness. This fight, a big all-British unification clash, Wales vs England with five world titles on the line, will help cement my legacy and show that I am number one in the division. I believe I’m too young, too quick and too good for Natasha Jonas and I will be bringing the belts back home to Wales with me,” Price said
