John Fury Told To Change His Role For The Fury-Usyk Rematch
Ricky Hatton has called on John Fury to change his role in his son Tyson Fury’s camp after his loss to Oleksandr Usyk.
Fury suffered the first defeat of his career as he came out second best to the Ukrainian in a split decision loss. The Gypsy King struggled to accept the result, later stating that Usyk only got the decision due to the war in Ukraine. Fury also doubled down on his win, saying he would have been more aggressive had he known he was behind.
A large part of that was due to his corner. Fury had his lead trainer, SugarHill Steward, Andy Lee, and John Fury. Steward is the head trainer, while Lee assisted. However, John Fury was overpowering the other two at the end of the rounds, leading to many voices in the corner. That earned John Fury a lot of backlash since Tyson had conflicting instructions. The Gypsy King will keep his father for the rematch, but Hatton wants to see a change in role.
Hatton On Fury
“When the one-minute interval happens, there’s got to be only one voice. If that advice is coming from (all directions), you’re like ‘Where do I go’?I think it’s fantastic to have two people in the corner (John Fury, Andy Lee or SugarHill) it’s great because you can pick their brains. Two heads are better than one and three is better than two but in the one-minute interval, you need to have one speaker and any coach that is worth their while would agree with me on that one,” Hatton said
The most successful period in Fury’s career occurred with Peter Fury. He achieved the biggest win of his career, beating Wladimir Klitschko to unify the heavyweight division. Peter was also critical of the cornerwork, as he was clear that there should be one voice. A change in the corner may give Usyk a slight advantage, knowing there is a weakness in team Fury. At the same time, it risks creating disharmony in camp since John has stood by his son during his career.
However, to perform at the elite level, major decisions have to be made. Billy Joe Saunders has said he will join Fury in camp. He is well known to team Fury, which may add an extra dynamic to the training style. Saunders has said there were issues in Fury’s camp for the Usyk fight without going into too much detail.
Fury’s Issues
There were also suggestions that Fury had been dropped in sparring by Jai Opetaia. The IBF Cruiserweight Champion was brought into camp to mirror Usyk’s southpaw style. He left the camp early, raising concerns that Fury was stopped. The Gypsy King also suffered a cut over his eye as the Usyk fight was delayed. Fury’s manager, Spencer Brown, has said changes will be made.
“There’ll be changes, not in management or his team, there’ll be some other stuff that he’ll be looking at training-wise. With the closeness of the fight last time, it could have gone either way. Some people will say Usyk was three rounds in front, some people won’t, it’s your opinion on boxing – that’s why we love it. But Tyson Fury will be back. He’ll be firing and we’ll see a new, better, improved Tyson Fury,” Brown told
