Jesse Rodriguez Confident Of Beating Pedro Guevara - 'I Want Undisputed At 115'

Jesse Rodriguez is confident he will overpower Pedro Guevara in their super flyweight clash.

Rodriguez faces his mandatory on the Jaron Ennis vs. Karen Chukhadzhian headline event this weekend. He is undefeated with a 20-0 record, with 13 knockouts to his name. Rodriguez became the WBC Super Flyweight Champion, beating Carlos Cuadras for the vacant belt. He won his next five fights, beating Sunny Edwards and Juan Francisco Estrada in his last fight. Those two bouts were meant to pose him serious problems. However, he stopped Edwards and Estrada. Guevara is 35 and at the tail end of his career.

His career record is 42-4-1, with 22 wins coming through knockout. He enters the fight with a split-decision victory against Andrew Moloney. He has been a professional since 2008, making him vastly more experienced than Rodriguez, who is only 24. But Rodriguez has the benefit of working with the best in the sport. Robert Garcia currently trains him. His stablemates are also of top quality, regularly crossing paths with the likes of Vergil Ortiz Jr., Jose Valenzuela and Jose Ramirez. Based on his form, Rodriguez was confident.

Rodriguez Reacts

“Come November 9, he’s going to come very hungry to take what I have. But right now is my time, and I don’t see him beating me. Just know that my hand will be raised on the night. My confidence is high but I remain humble. I know that just as fast as I got to where I am today I can lose it all in one fight. That’s why I am working hard every day in the gym. I want to try my best to go undisputed at 115 pounds. I want to accomplish what I can first at the weight and not look too far into the future,” Rodriguez said

Garcia also spoke of big plans for Jesse moving forward. He earmarked a potential unification fight against the WBA Champion Fernando Martinez. The latter is 17-0, with nine KO wins. His last fight was a unanimous decision win against Kazuto Ioka in Japan, showing he can win in enemy territory. They are expected to have a rematch on December 31 in Japan.

Garcia Reacts

He is unlikely to be overwhelmed by the prospect of facing Rodriguez. However, his resume does not show that he won against the very elite, as Garcia backed his fighter. He felt Rodriguez was close to becoming a breakout star that would allow him to headline PPV events. But he needed more statement wins for him to do that.

“I think at 115 right now, a unification fight. Maybe ‘Puma’ Martinez is probably the best out there, the biggest name out there unless in December he loses to Ioka. Then against Ioka, maybe in Japan. That’s probably the biggest fight out there for Bam.

“Bam would love to be undisputed at the division but we have to see if the champions are available. If nothing happens at 115 then it’ll be 118. He’s not going to just defend his belts against nobodies, against guys that don’t mean much for him. He wants to challenge himself, he does challenge himself. He wants the big challenges so I think 118 will be our next move,” Garcia stated
