Jermell Charlo Unsure If His Brother Will Ever Box, Jermell Wants Crawford At Lower Than 168

Jermell Charlo has questioned whether fans will ever see his brother, Jermall Charlo, return to boxing.

Jermall has been out of the ring since his last fight with Juan Macias Montiel all the way back in 2021. Thereafter, the boxer has been struggling with personal and mental health issues.

That has resulted in the WBC supporting the middleweight champion as he aims to get back to the boxing ring. Although Jermall has indicated his desire to return before the year is out, which has included him sharing some training footage, Jermell has doubts over whether his brother will box again.

After all, Jermall had been linked with the Canelo Alvarez fight only for Jermell to step in and face him on September 30th, 2023 instead.

Jermell Charlo On His Brother

“Truthfully, I really don’t know [if he will return] because I’m not in his household; I don’t talk to him every day. We kind of get into it. Every other year, we don’t ever seem to see eye to eye on certain things, but I wish my brother the best. I hope he bounces back. He’s got a family to feed, a lot of children to take care of, bills to pay, and a life to live. So, I don’t want it to be when it’s all said and done, everyone in the family coming to me to ask for some bread,” Jermell

Despite this being the case, the WBC has refused to strip Jermall. Instead, the President of the WBC Mauricio Sulaiman indicated that the organization was behind Charlo, who was looking to make a comeback.

This could only be done if there was strong evidence to suggest that Charlo would return soon. After all, failure to do so simply means that the middleweight division is being held up.

WBC On Jermall Charlo

“He was involved in some mental wellness situations and mental health, and the WBC has looked into this matter. We have addressed it by ordering an interim championship with Carlos Adames becoming the interim champion, and we have been supporting Charlo’s situation, and we will continue to support him. I am in close contact with him and his brother. I believe he will be fighting in the near future and resume his career. In summary, we will always be with our champion, and with our boxers, especially in the bad times,” Sulaiman said

Charlo on Crawford

In addition, Jermell Charlo has admitted that any fight with Terence Crawford would have to be at other than 168 pounds.

Jermell is currently bulking up, as he gets ready to face Canelo Alvarez at super middleweight. This will require him to move up two weight classes in order to make it happen.

Victory, however, would make Charlo undisputed in a second weight class. And if that were to happen, then Crawford would be open to facing the winner.

After all, he has indicated the possibility of moving up to 168 to fight Alvarez. However, if Charlo were the winner, then a fight with the American would also make sense. And yet, Charlo has shutdown those claims by stating that a fight with Crawford would have to be at a lower weight.

“168 is still not my weight division because it’s not as easy to make 168,” said Jermell when asked if he would stay at super middleweight to defend against Crawford or move back down to 154. I have to gain weight, and when I’m working really hard, it’s really tough [to make 168]. I can easily walk around at 168. I’m definitely not the naturally bigger fighter. 168 is not my weight division. I think I would have to see him [Crawford] at a different weight category,” Charlo

Implications

Therefore, the chances of a Crawford-Charlo bout happening may be in doubt. Charlo will no longer be undisputed at 154 once his fight with Alvarez begins, as Tim Tszyu will become the full WBO champion. The latter had been a mandatory for over a year, as the WBO decided to act.

Therefore, a fight with Charlo at 154 would no longer be for undisputed unless Crawford beat Tszyu. Meanwhile, a Canelo win over Charlo would be the only way Bud fights for all the titles at 168. So for now, there are still plenty of hurdles to overcome.
