Jermall Charlo’s Boxing Career In Tatters After DWI Charge
Former WBC Super Middleweight Champion Jermall Charlo has been hit with a driving whilst intoxicated charge.
The charge stems from an incident on May 6 where the boxer crashed his Lamborghini into another vehicle. It occurred on Brazoria County Roadway, Texas, after which Charlo was involved in a verbal confrontation with the man. But rather than stopping at the scene, Charlo drove off.
The authorities pursued him as he was cornered around a mile away from the scene. During their questioning, police discovered that Charlo looked drunk. An alcohol test revealed he was twice over the limit with a level of .15 in his blood. He was also charged with another misdemeanor for leaving the scene.
Sulaiman On Charlo
This could damage Charlo’s career further. He returned to boxing after over two years out with mental health issues. He was linked with the Canelo Alvarez fight before his brother Jermell Charlo got it. Jermell lost, setting the narrative for the other Charlo to avenge that loss. But that has not happened. Jermall instead beat Jose Benavidez Jr., while Canelo will box Edgar Berlanga. That leaves question marks over where Charlo goes next, especially since WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman stripped the boxer of his middleweight belt.
“So the WBC has made the decision, but at the same time we have compassion and still care for [Charlo’s] well-being. When he returns to boxing, we will walk with him, as well. We absolutely moved to support Jermall and tried to find ways to help him get to a better position. He was injured, then had a mental health situation, and when he came back last year and was overweight – that was a concern,” Sulaiman said
“He had been trying to resolve his weight situation, and it has gone nowhere. We are talking to [Charlo’s] promoter [TGB Promotions/Premier Boxing Champions] to help find the people who can help him with the specific actions he needs to take him to his recovery,” Sulaiman stated
Jermall’s Future
Jermall is also facing problems in his personal life. He is not on speaking terms with his brother, Jermell. Jermall was vocal about this as his brother was not present for his fight against Benavidez Jr. It was a massive moment for Jermall since there were question marks over how he would look.
He was also working with Roy Jones Jr. as he sought to kickstart the form that made him one of the brightest boxers in the sport. While he got the win, his brother’s absence was tough to take. This is especially true since Jermall had attended Jermell’s fight against Canelo and even hugged him backstage.
“If you have a problem, the best way to overcome your problems is to final a special person and talk to them. Some people, they’re here for you. People like me. DM me. I might hit you back. Find somebody to get you some help. It gets dark, and it’s real. If y’all talk to my twin brother. Tell him that I love him, and I won the fight, and y’all call him for me. He’s not answering my calls. Let’s get these big fights going, and I’ve got more to go. I’m happy to be back,” Jermall stated
