In some recent boxing news, Jermall Charlo has revealed that he will face Jose Benavidez Jr. on November 25th, 2023, in his comeback fight.
Charlo’s Struggles
Charlo has been out of the ring since his last fight in 2021, as he has been troubled by mental health struggles. In addition, his personal antics have also not helped him.
Following the Errol Spence Jr. vs. Terence Crawford fight, Caleb Plant hit out at Charlo on the basis that the latter had pulled his beard and disrespected him in front of his wife. And yet, his comeback fight does not say too much.
Charlo is the current WBC middleweight champion, who has chosen to fight someone who is at 154 pounds. Therefore, unless he stops Benavidez Jr. the performance may not resonate well with the fanbase.
In addition, his WBC mandatory Carlos Adames has been waiting for a fight since Charlo’s absence from the ring. Therefore, if the American does not uphold his mandatory obligations, he could be stripped. But moving forward, Charlo’s focus was clear.
Charlo On His Next Fight
“We’ll be back. A good fight. Let’s do it. I’m back. I get a chance to relaunch. Let’s do it. It’s going to be the best Charlo you’ve ever seen up to date. The best thing I learned from Roy was how to stay focused and not get distracted,” Charlo said
Provided that Charlo overcomes Benavidez Jr. then he could be in line to face Plant next. The latter has already spoken about his desire to face Charlo, following their recent bad blood as described already.
But since Plant fights at 168, would Charlo be willing to move up to super middleweight? And in any event, would a Plant fight be too soon after what Jermall has bene through? Time will tell how it all plays out.
Tsyzu Becomes WBO Champion
Meanwhile, Tim Tszyu has officially become the new WBO junior middleweight champion following Jermell Charlo’s fight with Canelo Alvarez.
Charlo was dominated in a one-sided fight as he came second best to Alvarez via a unanimous-decision loss. During the course of that process, Charlo was dropped in the seventh round.
However, he managed to see out the fight even if he did not inflict any significant damage on Canelo. Tszyu takes the belt after Charlo had not fought the Australian for over a year, given that he was his mandatory.
They had been on course to get in the ring only for the fight to be called off after Charlo injured his hand. Thereafter, Charlo chose to move up and face Canelo instead. In response, the WBO made the decision to upgrade Tszyu to the status of a full champion once Charlo fought Canelo which has now happened.
“After Charlo enters the ring on September 30, 2023, and is officially introduced as WBO Jr. Middleweight Champion, his status and recognition as WBO Champion is terminated “Ipso Facto. After Charlo’s WBO Champion status and recognition is terminated pursuant to the conditions set forth in the referenced WBO “Resolution,” Tim Tszyu will be automatically elevated from Interim Champion to Full Champion status,” WBO said
That did not sit very well with Charlo, as he hit out at the Australian before the Canelo fight. He was very vocal about how he felt he had been hard done by and expressed that the new champion was an ‘email champion.’
That could set a narrative for the pair to face each other since a win over Tszyu would make Charlo undisputed once again. So either way, the fighter may have a lot to prove.
