Jermall Charlo Struggling With Mental Health – ‘I Hope He Gets Back’

Jermall Charlo is suffering from mental health struggles as his next fight is no closer to getting made.

Charlo is 33-0, making him one of the better fighters around. Jermell had been out of the sport for over two years with mental health issues. He was not stripped of his WBC Middleweight Belt, as the organization supported him. He returned to beat Jose Benavidez Jr. in 2023, marking his return to the sport. But he was then stripped of his title after more inactivity. He had been linked with the Canelo Alvarez fight. But the Mexican faced Jermall’s brother, Jermell Charlo, instead. That fight does not look like it will get made, as he missed out on his biggest bout.

Reports indicated that he was in line to face Thomas LaManna next. This would have taken place on the Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach card on March 1. It would be part of a PPV card on Amazon Prime Video, giving Jermall the ideal platform. But LaManna says Charlo cannot commit to the bout. That has left him in a tough place since he had been putting in the hard yards to make the bout. But he recognized Charlo had to do what was best for his health.

Charlo’s Issue

“I have been locked in and training for what would be one of my biggest fights to date against a former unified champion. Unfortunately, I was just made aware he will not be ready, and the fight will no longer take place on that date. Whatever he is going through, I actually understand. Life and Mental health is real. He is a great fighter, and I hope he gets back on track and we can share the ring in the near future,” LaManna said

Jermall’s brother, Jermall, has also not boxed since 2023. He suffered a one-sided unanimous decision defeat in his last fight against Canelo Alvarez. He moved up two weight classes to take the fight. But the difference in weight was telling, as it was never competitive. Jermell was stripped of all his belts, meaning he was no longer undisputed at 154. Reports indicated that he earned $20 million from the Canelo fight. That would explain why he has remained out of the ring for so long since there would be no rush to return. But Jermell recently said that he wants the best names this year.

What’s Next?

That leaves question marks over whether he will fight at 154 or 160. It will be a tough task to come back down to 154, having moved up two weight divisions. If he moves to 160, he could line up a fight with his brother. Alternatively, a move to 154 opens the door for the Tim Tszyu fight. They were meant to face each other before Jermell pulled out with an injury.

On his return, Jermell chose to box Canelo instead. Jermell was eventually stripped, as Tszyu was elevated to a WBO Champion at 154. But since Tszyu lost that belt to Sebastian Fundora, a fight with Charlo would now be for bragging rights. The two Charlo brothers will no doubt want to make an impact in 2025.
