Jamaine Ortiz Stops Cristian Mino In Four Rounds - 'He Impressed Me'

Jamaine Ortiz dropped Cristian Mino four times to stop his man in four rounds.

Ortiz was having his first fight since losing to Teofimo Lopez. He felt hard done by, with suggestions that he had outboxed Lopez. However, Teo got the decision, landing more power shots to give Ortiz his second loss. In his post-fight comments, Ortiz was livid with the decision. His view received traction with the audience, with most of the crowd booing the decision. Lopez shut down those claims, stating that Ortiz did not want to compete. But Ortiz made his feelings very clear.

“I stuck to the gameplan. I listened to my corner, my team. [And] I thought I was winning. [And] I think I won the fight. What can I say? He couldn’t hit me, I was making him miss all night. 117-111 is just ridiculous,” Ortiz stated

But he revived himself by showing his new aggressive style. Ortiz began on the front foot immediately, walking his man down. He landed a right hand to the head to send his man to the canvas. The same thing happened in the second round. This time, Ortiz landed a body shot to send his man down. While Mino survived the round, it was the same thing in the third. Mino was on the back foot, getting hit with a three-punch combination. He hit the deck again, with blood pouring down from his nose.

Mino was clearly frustrated, which showed in the fourth round. He grabbed Ortiz near the waist and threw him to the floor, earning a point deduction. The fight would soon be over. Ortiz had his man backed up, landing left hooks on the head and body as Mino hit the canvas. That would be the last time, as the fight was over. Ortiz was now targeting a title shot against the WBA Junior Welterweight Champion Jose Valenzuela. The win took Ortiz’s record to 18-2, with nine knockout wins. Meanwhile, Mino’s record stands at 24-10-2.

Post-Fight Comments

“I was surprised he kept getting up, but I came in knowing was going to be tough. I hear them Argentineans are tough, so I was expecting nothing less. This performance was a good performance. I give it a B. I’m always a hard critic on myself, but this is just a forewarning for all these other 140s in the division. Rayo is the champ at 140 right now and that’s who I’m coming after.

“It’s just a fair warning that every performance after this is going to look just like that. I’m just waiting for that world title to come, that opportunity that I know is going to come soon. I’ll be a world champion real soon. Right now, Rayo is on top of my hit list. Also [IBF titleholder Liam] Paro, Richardson Hitchins, I know he’s fighting for a world title too. If he comes away with a victory, I’d like to fight him. And I’d love to run it back with Teofimo Lopez,” Ortiz said
