Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson Draws Staggering 108 Million Global Viewers!

108 million households across the globe reportedly watched Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson.

The fight received much criticism during the build-up after suggestions that it was not going to be competitive. Tyson entered the ring as a 58-year-old who had not boxed professionally since 2005 when he lost to Kevin McBride. Meanwhile, Paul had three boxing fights since last December, showing that he was a much more active fighter at 27. The fight failed to live up to expectations, as it was clear that Tyson had slowed down considerably.

Paul Vs. Tyson

Paul also appeared reluctant to go for the knockout, later stating that he had taken it easy on Tyson. But there was a perception that he may have been afraid to get knocked out. Despite the criticism, the event did record-breaking numbers. Reports indicate it brought in a live gate of $18,117,072, a record for a boxing event outside of Nevada, Texas. In addition, 72,300 people attended the AT&T Stadium, just shy of the record held by Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders‘ record of 73,126. And now it appears the viewing figures were huge.

108 million viewers watched it, as purported by Netflix, which means it became the most streamed boxing event ever. It also meant that Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano’s rematch was the most watched bout in professional women’s boxing history. This naturally raises the question of whether Netflix will stay in the boxing game. A large part of this was due to Tyson entering the ring. He is an iconic figure, and at the age of 58, not too many people will have the opportunity to see him live again. A thing that has hindered Netflix, however, has been the fact that the stream suffered numerous problems.

Impact

A vast majority of the fanbase complained that the stream had cut off, having a detrimental impact on the platform. Netflix could have positioned itself to follow in the footsteps of other broadcasters, such as DAZN and Amazon Prime, in streaming boxing fights. They have a deal with the WWE to air Monday Night RAW over 10 years in an agreement worth $5 billion. However, questions remain over whether Netflix can use that momentum to enter the sport of boxing.

As for Paul, the journey will continue. Paul has received callouts from Artur Beterbiev and Daniel Dubois. The Undisputed Light Heavyweight champion, Beterbiev, is coming off a victory against Dimitry Bivol. And at the age of 39, he may be looking for one more big payday. As for Dubois, he successfully defended his IBF Heavyweight Title by knocking out Anthony Joshua. The Joshua rematch broke down, meaning that he is in a position to look for other fights. Regardless of what Paul does next, he has put himself in a position to secure big fights simply because he can offer huge paydays.
