Jake Paul returns to the ring this Saturday to face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, live on DAZN.

Paul (11-1, 7 KO’s) continues to surprise everyone in the boxing world by building a  professional record which is full of a mixture of retired MMA stars and aging boxers. While he’s shown commitment to training and discipline, nobody can take “The Problem Child” seriously until he starts to face legitimate boxers. The one time he faced a pro boxer with a similar physique to him, he got handed his first loss against Tommy Fury.

Chavez Jr (54-6-1, 34 KO’s), by contrast, was taken very seriously once upon a time. How could you not when the son of arguably the greatest Mexican fighter ever, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr, steps foot into a boxing ring. Once a WBC middleweight champion, he squandered elite-level potential through poor discipline, inconsistent training, and a clear disinterest in the sport. His last major bout came in 2019 when he suffered a retirement loss on his stool to Daniel Jacobs, ending with objects being hurled at him by a furious hometown crowd.

Despite not being able to take him seriously and his clear flaws: notably his lack of head movement, questionable gas tank, and limited punch selection, Paul is younger, fresher, and vastly more motivated. He’s proven capable of going ten rounds at his own pace, and to be fair to him, he has developed a consistent jab and right hand combination that can win rounds. If he stays composed and keeps it long, he should win this one with ease.

Chavez Jr once had the tools to easily dispatch an opponent like Paul. He’s still the more technically experienced boxer, with 60+ pro bouts and wins over names like Andy Lee. If, by some miracle, he trains properly and shows up in shape, he could walk Paul down, bang to the body, and make it a physically draining fight.

Paul vs Chavez Jr: Prediction & Betting Tips

Paul is far from elite. In fact, he probably wouldn’t even win an English area title. But he’s active, in shape, and in the physical prime years of his life. Chavez Jr, meanwhile, has been physically and mentally checked out of the sport for a decade or so.

If Chavez Jr shows up in shape and lets his hands go, his clear technical advantage and past experience could make Paul crumble under pressure. However, I’m just not willing to bet on that outcome taking place.

Instead, my money is going on Jake Paul to win this by decision or technical decision at odds of 2.00 (William Hill). The American has the physical advantage and likely the power advantage, but I don’t think he has the capabilities of disguising or setting up a knockout punch against a ring savvy opponent like Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, even despite him being way past his best. I also don’t think the Mexican will want to be seen as a quitter against a “YouTuber” either.
