Jake Paul vs. Canelo Alvarez Will Happen – ‘Next Year, Why Wouldn’t They’
Jake Paul vs. Canelo Alvarez is going to happen in the future.
That is according to Paul’s manager, Nakisa Bidarian. Paul is coming off a record-breaking event against Mike Tyson as Netflix broadcasted their first-ever fight. The Problem Child won a one-sided unanimous decision, earning $40 million. The fight was heavily criticized in the build-up, with suggestions that Tyson should not have been in the ring. The 58-year-old suffered an inflamed ulcer, which prevented the original July 20 date.
It also transpired that Tyson wore a compression sleeve to deal with a knee injury, something which was disclosed after the fight. Tyson also recalled how he felt he could have died after his inflamed ulcer. But the fight still went ahead with Paul being considerably younger at 27. The Texas Athletic Commission still sanctioned the fight, as it went ahead as a pro bout with eight rounds. Each round lasted for two minutes.
Bidarian suggested that the Paul vs. Canelo fight could equally get sanctioned. He referenced how the Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather bout happened in 2017. McGregor was making his professional boxing debut. He had also been used to fighting in the UFC for five rounds, each lasting five minutes. This was a considerable departure from the standard boxing rules, where there are 12 rounds lasting three minutes each.
That fight ultimately went ahead, making it one of the most successful PPVs of all time, selling over 4 million. McGregor also managed to last 10 rounds with one of the greatest boxers ever, even if there were suggestions that Mayweather may have carried the Irishman. McGregor walked away with $100 million, with Mayweather earning significantly more than that, with reports that it was close to $300 million.
Paul Vs. Canelo
And given the amount of money that could be on the line between a Paul-Canelo fight, there is a narrative in place to make it happen. Canelo is looking to secure the biggest fights for taking the least amount of risk, meaning that a fight with Paul could open up. And Bidarian felt that it was only a matter of time before that fight happened.
“In terms of Canelo Alvarez, 1000% that fight is going to happen. Whether it happens this year or next year, that is one that is undoubtedly in the roadmap for Jake Paul. Absolutely not two-minute rounds. Tell me what the most important sanctioning body is in America. What would you say it is? If they do Mayweather vs. McGregor, why wouldn’t they do Canelo vs. Jake Paul.
“He may at some point look at what someone called a ‘Freak show.’ He may look at doing exciting, disruptive things, like fighting an Anthony Joshua or a Daniel Dubois, but that is not in his current roadmap. He [Jake] will be campaigning at cruiserweight, and Canelo, to my knowledge, walks around at 190,” Bidarian said
But following Paul’s win over Tyson, he said he does not need the Mexican. Paul has created a brand where he can fight MMA fighters or retired boxers and earn significant money. Although a fight with Canelo would be for life-changing money, it also exposes Paul to the biggest risk of his career, knowing he could lose in devastating circumstances against one of boxing’s greatest fighters.
