Jake Paul Disappointed Over Missing Out On Canelo – ‘We Verbally Agreed’

Jake Paul expressed his disappointment at not being able to fight Canelo Alvarez.
Reports initially indicated that a deal was close for a fight in May, which would have allowed Paul to secure his dream fight. He has spoken consistently about his desire to become a world champion before eventually facing Canelo. But things took a turn for the worse after Alvarez announced he had signed a four-fight deal with the Saudis. That included a fight against the IBF Super Middleweight Champion William Scull for Cinco de Mayo in May. A win for Canelo makes him undisputed at 168 pounds for the second time.
Canelo’s Future
He is also set to face Terence Crawford at 168 pounds in September for Mexican Independence Weekend. That prevented Paul from getting his dream fight, much to his frustration. He revealed that it would have taken place on Netflix in another event which had the potential to break records. The Problem Child broke records when he faced Mike Tyson on Netflix in his last fight, as it became the most streamed boxing event ever in history.
It also earned Paul $40 million, meaning he could have eclipsed that figure by facing Canelo. Paul hit out at Alvarez by accusing him of being disloyal. He referenced how Canelo has moved promoters on several occasions, from Golden Boy to Matchroon to PBC, before eventually signing with the Saudis.
Canelo is in a position where he can call the shots since he is one of the biggest cash cows in the sport. Paul has also been accused of doing similar things by signing big deals without necessarily facing the top names. He has developed a reputation for fighting former MMA fighters or boxers who are over the hill. But Jake could not hide the regret that emerged since he missed out on one of the biggest fights of his career.
Paul Reacts
“Pretty [bad]. I feel really bad. We’re literally, we verbally agreed, Nakisa [Bidarian] signed the contract with Netflix on our side. It was in their inbox and they’re like ‘yeah we’re signing it.’ I’m pissed. I want a real boxer. That’s why I wanted the deadliest boxer,” Paul said
This raises questions about where Jake goes next. He has been linked with a fight against KSI. The latter will have his first fight since losing to Tommy Fury in 2023. KSI takes on Dillon Danis, who was disqualified in his last bout when he boxed Logan Paul. Danis tried a chokehold as the referee waived the fight off. However, Jake has also been linked with Conor McGregor.
There were initial reports that McGregor could box Logan. However, Jake’s name was also mentioned, as he has a bigger profile in boxing. But McGregor’s UFC contract means Dana White would have to agree to it. So far, it does not look like it will happen. That has left Jake with plenty to ponder moving forward, as he navigates his career.
