Jake Paul Defends Bulking Up To 240 Pounds - 'I'm A True Heavyweight'

Jake Paul has no regrets over bulking up for his fight with Mike Tyson

Paul faces Tyson on July 20 in a pro-boxing fight. It will be an eight-round test, with 14-ounce gloves, in two-minute rounds. Paul will be 28 in the fight against the 58-year-old Tyson. The fight has raised safety concerns for both boxers. Tyson has not had a pro-fight since retiring against Kevin McBride in 2005.

While he did box against Roy Jones Jr. in 2020, it was an exhibition. Paul and Tyson have dismissed suggestions that the fight is scripted. That increased the pressure on both fighters to perform since it will air on Netflix for the first time in the network’s history. Paul is in the best form of his career, having beaten two pro boxers back to back.

He secured first-round stoppage wins over Andre August and Ryan Bourland. Paul will face a major challenge since he will be fighting at heavyweight. The Problem Child has fought at around cruiserweight, making this a challenge. Paul bulked up to around 240 pounds before he will cut some weight. There are concerns the extra weight will slow down Paul, as he could lose his speed and power. And yet, Paul felt he was fully prepared for the fight.

Paul Reacts

“Everything has been good but it’s been a little transition moving to heavyweight. I definitely needed to put on weight so that I’m able to compete with Mike Tyson and so that he’s not able to throw me around in the ring. We’ve been sparring heavyweights and eating more food. Mike Tyson has called me fat but I believe fat will turn into muscle. And come fight night I believe I will be able to move and dance around the ring like a true heavyweight,” Paul said

Nevertheless, Paul is facing Tyson, who is also on a mission. Mike has taken extra measures to get himself in top shape. He has substituted his vegan diet for eating raw meat. That has accompanied his ban on sex and weed, as well as the use of hypnosis.

Tyson is also putting in the hard yards, training three times a day. Tyson has nothing to lose since Paul is expected to win. The Problem Child is chasing a world title and a possible showdown with Canelo Alvarez. A loss against Tyson damages those hopes, so Paul cannot overlook his opponent.

“I have to reciprocate that same energy. But Mike Tyson is a killer. He’s ruthless. He’s the most vicious champion ever. So, I have to channel that Mike Tyson energy to finish him. And the legend must fall.”It will be difficult just moving up to heavyweight to face Mike Tyson with his power, his experience and his tenacity. He will no doubt pull out some veteran tricks that he has learned throughout his career,” Paul stated
