Ismael Barroso Calls Out Rolly Romero For A Rematch

Ismael Barroso has called out Rolando Romero following his win over Ohara Davies.

Barroso stopped Davis in the first round with two knockdowns to win the WBA interim junior welterweight title. That puts him in a position to face Rolando Romero for the full belt. This would be Barroso’s second shot at the title after Romero stopped him in the ninth round. It was a controversial decision, given that Barroso was still firing shots at Romero at the time of the stoppage. He was also ahead on all the scorecards before Tony Weeks stopped the fight. That has set the narrative for a rematch, something which he wanted.

Barroso On Romero

“I ruined their party, so I’m ready for the rematch if it happen, but I ruined their plans. I will if the public wants it. I’ll go after him a little bit more. I hit him hard, he’s going to go down. I prepare for twelve rounds. If the knockout comes, I’m welcome to it,” Barroso said

The chances of the fight happening next depend on whether Barroso is willing to step aside. Romero will likely face Ryan Garcia after the latter pulled out of talks for a Devin Haney fight. They are being linked with a big fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend, making it less likely that Barroso gets his title shot first. But Barroso was also willing to face Garcia to have the biggest fights. But even if that were the case, the winner of Garcia-Romero would have bigger fights, including a unification at 140.

Barroso On Garcia

“I don’t think anything is against me. Ryan Garcia, I’ll fight him, too. It’s injustice that he stopped the fight so soon. That’ll be a team decision [if I step aside]. We won’t answer that question. It was a very important fight coming off a loss. I should have never lost. A loss hurts at this age. It was an opportunity after four years to finally fight for a title, and it finally came. I should have been a champion. My last fight with Rolly, they stopped the fight, but I didn’t get hit,” Barroso stated

In the main event featuring Vergil Ortiz and Fredrick Lawson, Tony Weeks was involved in another controversial stoppage on the same card as Barroso’s fight. The referee stopped the first in the first round as Ortiz backed up Lawson on the ropes. He continued to unload with his right and left hands, but Lawson had covered himself up. Therefore, the shots were not causing too much damage. However, Weeks stepped in to stop the fight, which resulted in big criticism even if Ortiz felt it was a good stoppage.

“I think that he got saved. I was hurting him with all the jabs. [And] I wasn’t really putting anything behind it. I wish I could have kept going. I need the rounds, but hey, I was hurting him with the jab. [And] I stunned him with the jab and I didn’t even land it that hard, I’m sorry. Hey, I’m ready for anyone out there,” Ortiz stated
