Holloway Reacts To His Oliveira Loss – ‘No Excuses’

Max Holloway addressed the loss of his BMF title to Charles Oliveira at UFC 326 last weekend.

Oliveira put on a dominant grappling display to sweep the scorecards 50-45 and avenge the loss in the first Holloway fight. Holloway, known for his high-volume striking, was never allowed to find his rhythm, spending over 20 minutes of the 25-minute contest controlled on the canvas. Dustin Poirier stated ‘We’ve never seen Max dominated like that,’ while Daniel Cormier noted Charles ‘dominated arguably the best volume striker in history.’

“That was complete domination. I thought coming into this fight, there was going to be moments where Max was in trouble, moments where he might be on the fence, might be on his back. But I didn’t think it was going to be 25 minutes.

“We’ve never seen Max dominated like that. Charles looked possessed out there. He walked Max down, got his back to the fence, and with these awkward takedowns. It wasn’t fundamental, traditional wrestling. He just powered him to the ground with hip tosses, body locks, and Max had no answer for the takedowns,” Poirier said

Despite the nature of the defeat—his first at lightweight in seven years—Holloway remained determined to bounce back. However, he also gave Charles his credit.

“The highest of highs and the lowest of lows. Saturday night was not my night. Sorry to all my family, friends and fans that I have let down. Shout out to Olivera for doing his thing. All class so nothing but love to him. No excuses from this side and there never will be. I’ve been here before I know the work I need to do to get back to where I wanna be. We are far from done. See you guys at the top,” Holloway said
