Hearn Slams Katie Taylor Critics After Her Serrano Win -'It’s 2-0 To Katie'

Katie Taylor’s thrilling fight with Amanda Serrano has raised question marks over whether there will be a trilogy, as Eddie Hearn defended his fighter.

Taylor won a controversial unanimous decision on the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson card, much to the disappointment of the live audience, who could be heard jeering. The CompuBox numbers showed that Serrano landed 107 more punches than Taylor. However, she came out second best for the second time after she also lost the first bout in a controversial split decision. In her post-fight comments, Serrano was very vocal about Taylor’s tendency to headbutt her opponents. During the fourth round, Taylor clashed heads with Serrano, even if it was accidental. It resulted in a big cut over Serrano’s right eye, something Taylor targeted throughout the fight.

Taylor Vs. Serrano

Taylor was eventually deducted a point for getting in too close. This is something Taylor has been criticized for when she boxed Chantelle Cameron. Taylor lost the first fight against Cameron. However, she avenged the defeat to become the Undisputed Junior Welterweight Champion, making her undisputed in two weight classes.

Serrano will find it tough to pick herself back up. Following the first Taylor loss, she racked up five wins in a row. She was highly confident about winning, but another defeat against Taylor now raises question marks over whether she wants to get in the ring with her again. There are concerns over the officiating, while Taylor’s fighting style has come under scrutiny with suggestions that she is a dirty fighter.

However, the record-breaking numbers from the Netflix event show that there is potential to run things back. The fight generated approximately 50 million viewers, making Taylor vs Serrano the most-watched live professional women’s boxing fight in history. Taylor also reportedly earned nearly $6 million from the fight, while Serrano allegedly picked up around $10 million. 108 million viewers also watched the main event featuring Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, making the event an overall success.

Hearn Reacts

While Eddie Hearn has had differences with MVP promotions, the promoter said the numbers showed it was a viable event. However, whether there is a trilogy will depend on various factors. Taylor is 38 years old and has done everything in the sport. She also avenged her only loss against Cameron, meaning that Taylor must decide whether she wants to continue the Serrano rivalry.

“It depends on, probably, MVP – I mean look, Katie Taylor is with Matchroom and DAZN, and don’t forget that DAZN allowed that fight to take place, that was important that we do that because it was a tremendous opportunity for Katie Taylor…I saw Nikisa’s interview today with Off the Ball.

And he’s saying ‘no one thought Katie won the fight, Amanda’s the biggest star in boxing, and Katie is not appreciated like Amanda Serrano is’ – I mean, it’s all irrelevant. The reality is that they’ve got their options, we’ve got our options and it’s 2-0 to Katie Taylor… I don’t think that Katie would have an issue doing a third but it’s not going to be just no regard for Katie and her team to make one of the biggest fights in the sport,” Hearn said
