Haney Dismisses Teofimo Lopez, Canelo Warned Ryan Garcia Over De La Hoya

Devin Haney has dismissed Teofimo Lopez as a top contender at 140, despite his win over Josh Taylor

Lopez beat Taylor via a unanimous decision to win the WBO junior welterweight belt. And in the process of doing so, he became a two-weight and two-time lineal champion.

Lopez Makes History

And given that Taylor was the former undisputed champion, Lopez did beat the best in the division. And yet, Haney downplayed that victory by stating that Regis Prograis is the man at 140.

And it just so happens that Prograis is in conversations with Haney to try and make a fight at junior welterweight for the WBC belt.

Haney On Lopez

“I can’t say he’s ‘The guy. “He’s probably the most popular in the 140-lb division, but I think Regis would be that guy at 140,” Haney said

Nevertheless, a win over Prograis would put Haney in line for a unification with Lopez. And given the bad blood that has ensued in the past, it would be a fight for the fans. But for now, the focus appears to be Prograis.

Canelo On Ryan Garcia

Meanwhile, Canelo Alvarez has revealed that he advised Ryan Garcia over working with Oscar De La Hoya

The duo are currently in a lawsuit over a potential breach of contract. Garcia alleged that his contract had been breached because his agreement allowed him to apparently box on any network via pay-per-view.

However, Garcia was alleged told that his fight with Gervonta Davis had to be on DAZN too, as a result of an agreement that Golden Boy had.

As a result, both sides filed lawsuits as De La Hoya urged his fighter to honour his contract.

And given that Canelo also had a tough time with Golden Boy, as he sued the company also for an alleged breach of contract, Alvarez recalled advising Garcia about his former promoter.

Yeah [I saw it coming]. And I told [Ryan]—you can ask him. I told him, at the end of the day, it’s his decision, right? It’s his decision. From my experience I told him, ‘Hey, take it easy. You need to see what you’re gonna do.”

“I don’t know about anything in his contract. When I was with them, I made my own contract. They don’t come and say ‘You need to sign this.’ I came with my own, with what I want,” Canelo said
