Haney Denies Going To Court Over Garcia Lawsuit

Devin Haney denies going to court in relation to his Ryan Garcia lawsuit for battery and bodily harm.

Haney faced off against Garcia in April, losing a majority decision. He was sent to the canvas three times as Garcia secured one of the biggest upsets in boxing history. But the result became a no-contest, as Garcia later failed VADA tests for Ostarine. Ryan was banned for a year, meaning he could not box until April 2025. Haney responded by filing a lawsuit against Garcia for battery. The suggestion was that Haney had taken a significant amount of punishment from a fighter who had essentially taken PEDs.

Haney’s decision received a lot of criticism from boxers such as Tim Bradley. The perception was that Haney needed to put this event behind him and move on with his career as soon as possible. Devin has not boxed since that April bout, with no news forthcoming over his next opponent. Meanwhile, Garcia is already scheduled to have an exhibition against Rukiya Anpo on December 30. Oscar De La Hoya has also said that Garcia will be involved in big fights on his return.

Haney has lost a significant amount of money if his inactivity has been due to the extensive damage he had taken against Garcia. But getting money from Garcia will be a tough task. Devin had accepted $1.5 million from the boxer after they had agreed that Ryan would pay a fine if he came in overweight. Garcia ultimately came in three pounds over the 140-pound limit, paying $500,000 for each pound over. That suggests that Haney has no legs to stand on if he is looking to secure money from Garcia for loss of earnings.

Haney vs. Garcia

“It’s a little bit personal now. [Devin Haney] sued me… That’s a real legitimate lawsuit that I’m going through… I think the rematch would be huge. They think that I cheated. If they feel that way, let’s run it again and I’m gonna do him worse,” Garcia stated

Reports indicated that Haney had gone to court to file the lawsuit, but Devin has now responded by stating that this is not the case.

Regardless, Haney needs to get a move on with his boxing career. There are opportunities for him at 140 and 147 pounds. He could face the WBO Junior Welterweight champion, Teofimo Lopez. The rivalry has been talked about since their days at 135 pounds. The fight never happened after Lopez lost his unified titles to George Kambosos Jr. at lightweight. Haney would eventually beat Kambosos to become the Undisputed Lightweight Champion.

Alternatively, Haney could move up to welterweight. There is the opportunity to chase a belt in a third-weight class against Mario Barrios. Barrios is the WBC Welterweight Champion. Barrios did not look great in his last fight when he boxed Abel Ramos on the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson card. Barrios escaped with a split draw, but there are no immediate plans for a rematch. Considering how long Haney has been out of the ring, boxing fans had plenty to say.
