Gervonta Davis’ WBA Setback

In a move that reshapes the lightweight division, the WBA has reclassified Gervonta Davis as its “Champion in Recess.”
This ends Davis’s four-year reign as the full champ, allowing the sanctioning body to move forward with new championship bouts. The downgrade, confirmed by WBA President Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, was triggered after a warrant issued for Davis’s arrest by the Miami Gardens Police Department. Tank faces charges of battery, false imprisonment, and attempted kidnapping following a domestic violence report filed by his ex-partner.
The incident reportedly occurred on October 27, 2025, at a gentlemen’s club where she worked. Surveillance footage reportedly corroborates her account that Davis used force to restrain and move her against her will. Law enforcement officials have confirmed they are collaborating with the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force to locate and apprehend Davis.

The WBA is expected to order a fight between Floyd Schofield (ranked #1) and Lucas Bahdi (ranked #2). Tank has not fought since a controversial majority draw against Lamont Roach Jr. in March 2025 and he saw his Jake Paul fight collapse due to these emerging legal threats.

The most pressing “next step” for Davis is to surrender to authorities. Unlike his previous legal troubles, the existence of surveillance footage from the Miami Gardens club significantly complicates his defense. Given his status as a repeat offender—having served time in a Baltimore jail as recently as 2023 for violating house arrest—prosecutors are likely to push for a significant prison sentence rather than the leniency he has received in the past.
From a career perspective, Davis has hit a complete standstill. His “Champion in Recess” status effectively freezes his leverage. The collapse of the lucrative Jake Paul fight—which was expected to be a massive Netflix crossover event—stripped him of a career-high payday and signaled that major broadcasters are now viewing him as a “liability.”

Before these legal issues, Davis had already hinted at a 2025 retirement, citing a desire to focus on his children. These recent events may force him to do so. If Davis is incarcerated for an extended period, the lightweight division—currently home to young stars like Shakur Stevenson and William Zepeda—will simply move on. If he eventually returns, he would likely have to rebuild again.
