Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach Jr. Announced For December 14
Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach Jr. has been officially announced for December 14 on Amazon Prime Video from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
Davis will defend his WBA Lightweight Title after knocking out Frank Martin in his last fight. That was Davis’ first bout in over a year since he stopped Ryan Garcia in the seventh round to become the face of boxing. Davis has received criticism for not facing the big names. He was in talks with Vasiliy Lomachenko, who is the IBF Lightweight Champion. The Ukrainian stopped George Kambosos Jr. to win the IBF Belt. There were reports that Davis was going to fight him in November. But the Ukrainian’s team confirmed that Lomachenko was not going to fight this year.
Davis Vs. Roach
But Davis had numerous opportunities to take that fight when Loma was in his prime. There were also reports that Davis could have boxed Shakur Stevenson. Shakur is the WBC Lightweight Champion and is coming off a win against Artem Harutyunyan. Shakur would then eventually sign a deal with Matchroom Boxing. He was set to fight Joe Cordina on October 12. It was going to take place on the Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev card. However, Shakur pulled out of that fight after injuring his hand in sparring.
Shakur subsequently underwent surgery, and he is not expected to be back until early next year. Stevenson has also said that he wants to face William Zepeda on his return. Zepeda is his WBC mandatory, meaning that Davis has had to look elsewhere. Roach is a 25-1-1, with only ten knockouts to his name. He is the WBA Super Featherweight Champion after having beaten Hector Garcia to claim the belt. Davis has already stopped Garcia, who also moved up from 130 pounds to face him.
Roach is a massive underdog, given Tank is an elite fighter. Davis has 28 knockouts to his name out of his 30 wins, meaning that Roach will struggle to prevent his opponent from walking him down.
Roach also has some decisions to make depending on the outcome of the fight.
Keyshawn Reacts
Provided that he beats Davis, he will have to decide whether he wants to defend at 135 pounds or move back down to defend at 130. The winner knows that there are other big fights available in the division. Outside of the big hitters, there are also possible fights against Andy Cruz, Keyshawn Davis, Floyd Schofield, and Raymond Muratalla. Keyshawn has already said that he wants to box Davis, provided that he comes through his next fight.
“I can be the Face of Boxing because I can fight, and I bring that energy too. I just have to keep being who I am. [And] I don’t have to do nothing else different. Frank Martin, no. Gervonta, yes, because he has a belt, meaning I’m going after the belt. I need a belt to solidify Keyshawn Davis, the businessman, and then I can go after everybody. So, if Tank wants to fight me, I will gladly take his belt,” Keyshawn stated
