Gennadiy Golovkin Could Fight Again - 'I Never Announced My Retirement'

Gennadiy Golovkin has not ruled out boxing again, as the 42 has not officially retired.

Golovkin has not been in the ring since facing Canelo Alvarez in their trilogy in 2022. The Khazak lost a unanimous decision, meaning he failed to win a single fight against the Mexican. GGG will feel hard done by, with many believing he had won their first clash. However, the result was declared a split draw, with many calling it a robbery.

Canelo won the next two fights, ending the debate over the first fight. Golovkin’s current record is 42-2-1. 37 of those wins are by way of knockout. He relinquished his IBF and WBA middleweight belts while becoming the President of Kazakhstan’s National Olympic Committee. This raised suggestions that GGG will not enter the ring again. However, he has left the door open.

GGG Reacts

“I’m not retired. I never announced my retirement, and it’s not my nature to announce things like that. I think to me, life is moments, and if an opportunity arises or something comes up, yes, we might see Gennady Golovkin in the ring again,” Golovkin said

This naturally begs the question: who could GGG face? He could target a fight on a Saudi Arabian show. GGG has a big name, allowing him to feature and earn a big purse. There are plenty of options at 160 that would allow him to earn a big payday. Chris Eubank Jr. has previously indicated his desire to face GGG. Eubank Jr. is now 34, and that fight would sell out in the UK. It would also not be a big risk since Eubank is not known for being a big puncher.

Alternatively, GGG could seek out an exhibition against a retired fighter. Andre Ward recently increased suggestions that he could come out of retirement, saying he wanted ‘all the smoke.’ Fans interpreted that as Ward wanting to come back. At 40, Ward is younger than GGG despite his retirement.

Will It Happen?

GGG could also target a title shot. Carlos Adames is the WBC Middleweight Champion. He is seen as one of the strongest champion in the weight class. However, Adames is 30, meaning he is entering his prime. The fight is unlikely to generate a big sum, meaning it is a risk for GGG. Regardless, his promoter, Tom Loeffler, wants him to have one more fight.

“I was always hoping for one more fight, whether it was a farewell fight in Kazakhstan, or one of these matchups you see in the Middle East, that type of thing. That’s a very high position in Kazakhstan – he’s not only the head of Olympic boxing in the country, he’s the head of every sport of the national Olympic team in Kazakhstan. So, that’s a full-time job for him….It seems like he’s just going to get on with his life. It’s a big position that he’s been appointed to in Kazakhstan. So, I believe he’ll just get on with his career. Staying involved with sport, but not actively in the ring,” Loeffler said
