Garcia Destroys Haney With Three Knockdowns To Win

Ryan Garcia secured a huge upset, sending Devin Haney three times to canvas to beat him in a majority decision.

Garcia was a massive underdog based on the pre-fight build-up. Admissions of drinking, smoking weed and then missing weight meant the odds were in favor of Haney. The fight did not start that way. Garcia’s power was shown in the first round, connecting a left hook, which stunned Haney. Garcia took the round, shocking team Haney.

Haney In Control

The Dream recovered well, establishing his jab in rounds two and three. Garcia boxed on the outside, with Haney popping off his jab at will. Haney had settled down. There were worries he would outbox Garcia. Ryan’s power was always there, reminding Haney of it with a sharp right hand in the fifth.

Just when Garcia appeared to be running out of ideas, he sent Haney down for the first time. A crisp left, followed by a right, dropped Haney. The Dream started clinching. Garcia threw on the break, but the referee docked a point, much to the dismay of the fans.

Garcia Drops Haney

Garcia attempted to finish Haney in the seventh and eighth. However, Haney stayed out of range, with Garcia unable to follow up. But Garcia found another big knockdown. Garcia pinned Haney from the ropes and connected with a left hook to put him on the floor again in the 10th.

Garcia On Top

Garcia repeated the trick in the 11th with another left hook to drop Haney. With both men exhausted, Garcia had to hold on in the final round to secure a victory.

Ryan did that, taking a win on the judges’ scorecards: 112-112, 114-110 and 115-109.

“Come on guys, you really thought I was crazy? You guys lost your own mind. I just knew I had control after that. It’s hard to recover from big shots. You know, maybe my conditioning wasn’t my best, but at the end of the day I got the job done. You guys hate on me because I’m pretty and (expletive). At the end of the day, I’ve been boxing all of my life and all I do is love God and try to help the children and you guys straight hated on me. You guys do not love the truth. I need a shot of beer, or like alcohol or something to get my mind going. You feel me? I’m just kidding. Man, can’t you guys take a joke, man?” Garcia

“I’m disappointed with my performance, but I showed that I can fight after a knockdown and getting hurt. I fell asleep on the left hook. I was more surprised than hurt the first time […] I would love a rematch. I gave him a shot, it’s only right he gives me a shot back. He didn’t make weight, so I’m still the champion. We can run it back,” Haney
