Fury Vs. Usyk Rematch Won't Happen - 'He’ll Retire, He's Struggling To Deal With It'

The Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk rematch will not happen.

That is according to Johnny Nelson. Usyk defeated Fury in a split decision to become the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World. It was Fury’s first defeat, as his post-fight comments showed it was difficult to accept. He was adamant that he had won the fight, despite almost getting knocked out in round nine, only to be saved by a standing eight count. Fury also alleged that Usyk only won due to the Russia-Ukraine war.

Since then, Fury has been relatively quiet on social media. He did wish Frank Warren well during the five vs. five tournament against Eddie Hearn. His father, John Fury, has also kept a low profile. And yet, Fury has now been in the headlines for the wrong reasons.

Fury vs. Usyk

He was spotted getting thrown out of a pub in his hometown of Morecambe as he was on his knees. Fury has previously struggled with mental health and alcohol abuse. This was after the Wladimir Klitschko win. Fury would never end up having a rematch with Klitschko. Now, Nelson believes Fury will not rematch Usyk.

“I think Tyson Fury, the realization of what’s happened to him, will kick in slowly but surely. I don’t believe Tyson Fury will fight Oleksandr Usyk next or again. He [Fury] either packs it in or Usyk retires or moves down [to cruiserweight]. I don’t think he’ll get in with Usyk again. I think he’ll retire because of the fashion of his defeat, and he’ll just be struggling to deal with it. Yeah, I don’t. Maybe his legs aren’t gone, but he’s not the fighter he was. His last fight and his fight before that [Francis Ngannou] told us that. Maybe it’s that time,” Nelson said

Nevertheless, Fury has exercised his rematch clause. The rematch has been set for December 21, giving Fury plenty of time to prepare himself. During the middle rounds of the fight, he was dominating the fight. But there are question marks over whether Fury can replicate that again. To keep up with Usyk, he gassed himself out.

Fury’s Future

He could adopt a change of tactic by pressing the action. But that will play into Usyk’s hands, as Fury is unlikely to last the distance and could get caught coming in. His preparation was also on point. He had been training since his win over Francis Ngannou. Fury’s physique was praised. So, the fact that he has been drinking at a time when he should be back in the gym and rectifying his mistakes is worrying. Nelson was clear that Fury’s best days are gone.

“When you’re that successful financially and gotten to the top, unless you really love it and you’re prepared to rough it out and get back there again, why would you listen to anybody that you think is a lesser man than you to tell you what to do? His first fight against Deontay Wilder [on December 1, 2018] was his last stellar performance. Tyson Fury may train right, but I feel the last time we saw the best of him was his first fight against Wilder,” Nelson added
