Fury Vs. Ngannou Has A Rematch Clause

Tyson Fury’s contract with Francis Ngannou does include a rematch clause.

Both fighters will face each other on October 28th, 2023, in Saudi Arabia in a massive crossover event. Fury’s WBC belt is not on the line, but Ngannou has the chance to cause an upset as he makes his boxing debut.

The fight did divide the boxing community with some becoming increasingly frustrated that the undisputed fight with Oleksandr Usyk did not go ahead.

Despite the Ukrainian agreeing to take a 70-30 split against him, even if he did have three belts, the fight never got over the line. And now the existence of a rematch clause will push things back even further.

Regardless of whether Fury wins or not, a rematch clause will delay any preparations for an Usyk fight. Fury cannot be expected to take on a unified heavyweight champion by facing an MMA fighter in the run-up.

In addition, even after a potential rematch, Fury will likely want to face a professional boxer before even thinking about Usyk. Therefore, the following comments do not bode well for boxing fans.

Fury vs. Ngannou

“Yes, we want to see the undisputed title. Of course, we’re going to see it in this era. I do think we’ll see Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury meet next year when and if they both win their next couple of fights, which I think they will. I think Fury’s big favorite in this fight, but if he gets clipped by Ngannou, he’s got problems. Yeah, I understand; I can’t confirm absolutely; there’s a rematch clause, which makes sense, but fascinating event. It’s a real risk if he doesn’t take it seriously. Anything can happen in a fight. Expect the unexpected,” Gareth A. Davies

Nevertheless, the move by Fury shows that currency is taking precedence over legacy. While boxers are prize fighters, the boxing fan base is ultimately suffering in not getting the biggest fights. And there is no getting away from that.
