In heavyweight boxing news, Frank Warren has reassured fans that Tyson Fury will fight Oleksandr Usyk next regardless of Daniel Dubois’ appeal against the Ukrainian.
Following Dubois’ stoppage in the ninth round, the boxer lodged the appeal that the result should be overturned. This was on the grounds that he had dropped the Ukrainian in the fifth round, which was then deemed a low blow.
That allowed Usyk to take over three minutes to recover as he then stopped Dubois later down the stretch. In the aftermath of the fight, the punch did divide the boxing community with a mixed response as to whether it was a low blow.
“It WAS low, weather his protector is high or not(which should of been pulled at the start of the fight if team Dubious felt it was high) it’s just below waistband. Ye, Usyk milked the time he was allowed but, no one can answer weather he stays down it the ref counts it,” Liam Smith
Dubois should be champion after that body shot, definitely wasn’t a low blow. Usyk didn’t like and took full advantage of the time given to recover. Did Dubois give up there & Quit or was it just a great Jab?” Josh Taylor
Fury-Usyk Still On
Although the decision is unlikely to get overturned, in that it did not appear to be a clear mistake. Therefore, Warren has let the fanbase know that Fury-Usyk will happen next regardless.
“At the moment, we are waiting until the WBA come back to us, which they haven’t yet. I am hoping we are successful in where we came then we will be in a position where Daniel is put in a position to fight Usyk and we will deal with that. But that is not going to get in the way of this fight,” Warren
The news is massive for the heavyweight division since they have not had an undisputed champion since 1999. That is when Lennox Lewis beat Evander Holyfield to take home all the belts.
And since both fighters are undefeated, one boxer must come up short in the biggest boxing event of this year. But in order to do that, both fighters have avoid an injury in the meantime.
Fury is historically known for pulling out of fights, as shown by the Wladimir Klitschko rematch which never went ahead. So, moving forward, there is still some obstacles potentially in the offing before the fight happens.
Fury’s $100 Million Deal
In addition to this, Bob Arum has revealed that Tyson Fury will make over $100 million for his fights with Francis Ngannou and then Oleksandr Usyk in Saudi Arabia.
The Gypsy King is set to face Ngannou on October 28th, 2023, in a fight where he is set to earn a reported $50 million. And given that he is facing an MMA fighter who is making his boxing debut, the sum is lucrative indeed.
And on top of that, Fury’s WBC heavyweight title will not be on the line even though the fight will go on the two fighters’ records. Meanwhile, the news of the undisputed bout was announced on September 29th, 2023.
The news did take the boxing world by storm. This is since Fury had stated that he was not interested in facing the Ukrainian. Instead, his focus was to secure the highest purses.
“Nope, I am not interested in fighting Usyk. He’s a little Ukrainian dosser. That’s all he is to me. No interest in unifying the division. It doesn’t mean s*** to me. All that stuff about unifying and whatever, it really doesn’t mean anything to me. I am looking for the biggest payday. Most of the time, Usyk doesn’t cut it,” Fury
But now it appears that a high purse has been agreed, paving the way for the biggest fight in boxing.
“Tyson has to take care of business on October 28th, when he fights Ngannou, and Then we’re off to the races with the unified heavyweight championship. Obviously, the date is not going to be confirmed until after October 28th because what happens if Tyson gets busted up or hurts his hand? “I think he’s going to make a lot more. I don’t know the number, but it’s a lot more than $100 [million],” Arum
