Fury Told He Will Never Beat Usyk – ‘Usyk Has His Number, He Stops Him’
Tyson Fury will never beat Oleksandr Usyk.
That is according to Hall of Fame fighter Barry McGuigan. Usyk defeated Fury in a split decision to become the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion. It was Fury’s first loss, as Usyk became a two-weight undisputed champion following his feat at cruiserweight. The scorecards did not reflect Usyk’s dominance. Aside from the middle rounds, Usyk was the far better fighter.
He was arguably deprived of getting a ninth-round knockout after the referee imposed a standing eight-count instead. After the loss, Fury refused to accept the result. He blamed the judges, saying Usyk only got the decision because of the Russia-Ukraine war. He also referred to Usyk as an amateur boxer. The Gypsy King was then spotted getting thrown out of a bar in his hometown after appearing drunk.
Fury Vs. Usyk
The major problem is that Fury had been training since his Francis Ngannou fight last October until May when they fought. Fury was praised for his physical shape, meaning it is difficult to see how Fury can improve his conditioning.
He is known for ballooning up between camps, and he is not getting any younger. Fury also took serious punishment from Usyk, as he was bouncing off the ropes in round nine. Although there is a rematch in December, Fury won’t fight for undisputed since Usyk vacated his IBF belt. McGuigan does not see how Fury can get a win.
“[Fury will] vever, as far as I’m concerned [beat Usyk]. I don’t mean that in a nasty way, I’m just saying Usyk has his number. He was lucky to get through the fight. It could’ve been stopped. I don’t think he’s going to do any better … I’m not God and I can’t say who’s going to win fights, I’m only guessing as we all are. But my guess is that, judging on his performance last time, I don’t think he’s going to be any more effective against Usyk. I think Usyk this time will probably stop him,” McGuigan said
Fury’s Team
One of the criticisms of Fury’s performance was the cornerwork. He had SugarHill Steward, Andy Lee and his father, John Fury. Steward was seen as the lead trainer while Lee was assisting. However, John Fury was criticized for overpowering the other two, and Tyson was given different instructions.
The Gypsy King stated that had he known he was behind on the cards, he would have pressed the action. Fury has ruled out making any changes to his corner, which could cost him. Peter Fury, Tyson’s former uncle, made it clear that there should have been one voice in the corner. McGuigan felt Fury would keep the same corner.
“I would expect him to show loyalty to the corner, he’s had that corner for quite a while and he’s been successful, why would he change it? He’s done very well as a heavyweight champion. He’s been around a long time. He’s served the sport well. He’s earned a lot of money,” McGuigan stated
