Frank Warren Defends Tyson Fury Amid Mass Criticism

Frank Warren has defended Tyson Fury’s decision to fight Francis Ngannou on October 28th, 2023.

The WBC heavyweight champion’s crossover bout will result in a ten-round boxing match against someone who has never entered a boxing ring before.

That resulted in a huge amount of backlash from the boxing community, in particular Carl Froch, who admitted that the desire for the fight was based on money.

Naturally, that raised more scrutiny over the breakdown in talks with Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed fight.

The narrative from Fury’s camp was that the Ukrainian was targeting a fight in Saudi which is why the negotiations broke down. And yet, Fury’s decision to fight in Saudi has now raised more eyeballs.

But for all the criticism that was coming his way, Queensbury’s Warren defended his fighter on the basis there were no big names to target.

“You know, you can’t have Ruiz saying you want $20 million and that’s the one coming over here, so that’s a dead duck. You also got a situation where fighting for the title doesn’t seem to be what guys want to do.

“Joshua would much rather—he just had a warm-up fight—would much rather go and fight a guy that Tyson has beaten, rather than fight for the WBC title on a 60/40 basis.

“The fight everybody wants to see including us, including Tyson because he called it out and made the offer and they accepted, was Usyk.

“And they walked away. And they walked away because they thought they were walking away into better and bigger things,” Fury

Provided that Fury does overcome Ngannou, the attention will turn towards an Usyk fight if the latter also beats Daniel Dubois on August 26th, 2023.

However, Fury’s standing with the boxing community has declined with the perception that he is difficult to negotiate with.

After all, failed fights with Usyk and Anthony Joshua have not helped his cause. And there is no getting away from that until Fury decides to sign on the dotted line.
