Foster Edges Past Conceicao To Regain WBC Super Featherweight Belt
O’Shaquie Foster beat Robson Conceicao in a split decision to become the WBC Super Featherweight Champion, avenging the loss in their first fight.
Foster made no mistake this time, as he left everything in the ring to take the decision: 115-113, 115-113 and 113-115. The first fight controversially went in favour of Conceicao via a split decision, although the CompuBox numbers showed Foster landed more shots. The rematch was a lot closer as Foster eventually pulled away in the championship rounds. It was cagey early on, as Foster switched to the southpaw stance by just round two. The challenger used his jab and counter-right hooks with success early on.
Conceicao Vs. Foster
But the tide turned in round three as Conceicao set the pace. He was behind his stinging jab, connecting to the midsection and upstairs to set up his right hand, which found the target. A left-right combination hurt Foster in the fourth, although the latter replied with a left hook on the counter. Foster made adjustments in the fifth as he countered Conceicao’s right hand. The momentum was now in favor of Foster, who was walking down his man in the seventh.
Conceicao slowed down in the eighth as his high guard dropped considerably. But Foster’s low activity allowed Conceicao to back him, as he was not going anywhere. A right hand connected on Conceicao’s jaw in the tenth, which buckled him.
Foster was not able to get the finish, but he did enough to take the win to become a two-time super featherweight world champion.
Post-Fight
Foster now has the chance to unify in the division, with a possible fight against the IBF Champion Anthony Cacace. There is also the chance to face off against Emanuel Navarrete. Foster targeted a fight with Navarrete or Oscar Valdez.
“He’s a helluva fighter, it’s unbelievable. I told you I was gonna step it up and bring it to him and that’s what I did. I’m still not satisfied with my performance, but I showed my versatility. I thought I had him for a moment. He’s a veteran. He’s been around the game a long time and he knows how to survive. I want the winner of Emanuel Navarrete-Oscar Valdez,” Foster said
“I’m happy because I know what I did in the ring today. I know I did a good job,. For me, he’s a good fighter, and I can’t speak poorly of him. But I know I did a good job today in the ring,” Conceicao said
