Former WBO Welterweight Champion Jeff Horn Retires

Australian boxer Jeff Horn has announced his retirement from the sport in order to combat anti-bullying through teaching in schools.

The 35-year-old has been out of the ring for three years since his last fight against Tim Tszyu. In a mega-domestic clash, Horn suffered a TKO loss to Tsyzu.

While the latter has gone on to excel by becoming the WBO mandatory for Jermell Charlo’s undisputed titles, Horn did not recover from the loss.

And now Horn has called time on his career as an announcement will be made during a presser at the Suncorp Stadium.

“I’ve enjoyed my time, that’s for sure as a boxer, but now I’ve got more important work to do. My next flight is definitely my biggest, and it’s personal, and it’s to try and protect every kid,” Horn

Horn’s career is certainly one that will be remembered. He shocked the world when he beat Manny Pacquiao via a decision to win the WBO welterweight title.

Although he secured a unanimous points win, the boxing community was divided over the result. This is particularly since ‘Manny’ had landed more punches, but in the aftermath, Horn remained defiant.

“There will always be a backlash where people say I got lucky, or whatever. There will always be the naysayers saying I didn’t win the fight, but I felt like I won the fight. Everyone has a right to their opinion. I’m sure I’ve [gained] a lot more fans over there than I’ve lost,” Horn

Thereafter, he defended the belt successfully by stopping Gary Corcoran. The success was short lived, however, as a defeat TKO loss to Terence Crawford followed.

Such a defeat did nothing to damage Horn’s career, given what Crawford has achieved. The latter has stopped all his opponents at welterweight, so the manner of Horn’s defeat was nothing new.

And if Crawford does go on to become undisputed champion when he faces Eroll Spence Jr. on July 29th, 2023, then that defeat will become all the more respectable with hindsight.

But with a record of 20-3-1 that includes a world title, Horn has nothing left to prove.
