Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s time as a professional boxer is long over. However, the American still seems to have found plenty of ways to stay in the spotlight. Mayweather recently announced an initiative to provide Christmas gifts for orphans in Israel.

When it comes to online boxing news, Mayweather’s support for Israel may or may not have gotten him beat up recently in England. Mayweather has denied this happened, but there are plenty of rumors swirling. To see Mayweather caught up in a controversy isn’t surprising. Mayweather had a few moments where the public was caught up in debate, but the subject of this particular scandal seems strange.

What is Floyd Up To?

Mayweather has never been shy about flashing his considerable wealth. During an Instagram post over the past weekend, Mayweather sent out a message about how he would support orphans in Israel. Over the next year, Mayweather promised to provide every orphan in Israel with a birthday gift.

The boxer’s generosity is for a good cause. The timing of everything could put Mayweather in the crosshairs for criticism. Tensions between Israel and Palestine have been especially high over the past year.

While the war in the Middle East rages on, people who have supported one side or the other in the conflict typically draw detractors from all corners of the world. Mayweather announced the charity endeavor ahead of his appearance in Israel at a “Standing Together” event.

Not long after the announcement, Mayweather was allegedly attacked by a mob in London. But he denies getting punched.

Mayweather has been public over the past few months over his support of Israel.

Mayweather Has Made Other Donations in Israel

Earlier this year, Mayweather visited United Hatzalah headquarters in Jerusalem. He donated $100,000 to provide protective equipment for volunteers. The organization said the donation helped provide the organization with 100 bulletproof vests and helmets.

Mayweather also went to visit the center to provide his support, and he also lent the use of his private plane to the effort.

Mayweather’s Exhibition Fight Falls to the Side

Mayweather has been willing to take on unorthodox opponents during the last part of his career in the ring. This trend started with Mayweather fighting Conor McGregor in a glorified exhibition bout that was sanctioned as a professional fight. While the MMAfighting latest news shows that this match did well at the boxing office, it signaled an end to Mayweather’s desire to fight professionally.

Over the next few years, Mayweather got into the exhibition boxing scene. He fought one of the Paul brothers and even took on some fighters over in Japan. There were rumors that Mayweather was supposed to have a rematch with Manny Pacquiao in 2024.

However, Mayweather didn’t get an opportunity to fight his old rival. Pacquiao stunned a number of observers by taking another professional fight.

Mayweather Had a Lucrative Career

During Mayweather’s boxing career, he was as successful at the box office as he was in the ring. He compiled a 50-0 record during his career, ending with his TKO win over McGregor in 2017. Mayweather collected 15 major world champions between five weight classes.

He was a champion at super featherweight, light welterweight, welterweight and light middleweight. Mayweather’s fight with Pacquiao brought in $400 million in pay-per-view sales. His fights with McGregor, Canelo Alvarez, and Oscar De La Hoya also brought in more than $100 million in revenue.

During Mayweather’s career, he has brought in more than $1 billion in revenue. While he had a few ugly incidents outside of the ring, no one could ever deny Mayweather’s talent.

Mayweather also brought in boxing fans like few other fights have.

Mayweather Has Been Involved With Other Charities

Mayweather has been involved with plenty of other charitable causes. Before Mayweather fought McGregor, VIP packages were sold for the fight at $20,000 a piece. All of the proceeds from those sales went to the London Charity Working Action Group.

Mayweather has also had people record him on video walking around and handing homeless people $1,000. Mayweather challenged some of his fellow athletes and celebrities to do the same thing.

In 2009, Mayweather started a non-profit to help support people who lived in Nevada. Mayweather hosts several events of this organization to raise money to support various causes in Nevada.

Mayweather Looks for Something Post-Boxing

While Mayweather has stayed busy on the exhibition boxing scene, there is some evidence that interest in these fights may be fading. Depending on the two opponents, there has been more than one case of boxing fans being disappointed with how competitive the fights actually are.

The fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson brought plenty of criticism once people realized that Tyson wasn’t going to be able to perform at his best. No one should have been surprised with how Tyson fought.

Tyson is creeping up on 60 and hasn’t been a competitive athlete in nearly 25 years. Expecting anyone to turn back the clock, especially someone with the personal demons Tyson has overcome, isn’t fair.

But Mayweather has always marched to the beat of his own drum. Providing birthday gifts for orphans is a great cause. But his willingness to step into a high-tension situation right now is a fascinating choice.

Hopefully, Mayweather will be able to conduct his charity in peace.
