Souleymane Cissokho was born on July 4, 1991, in Dakar, Senegal. Growing up in a sports-oriented environment, Cissokho was drawn to boxing at an early age. His family moved to France when he was a child, which provided him with more opportunities to pursue his passion for the sport. Cissokho started training in boxing seriously during his teenage years and quickly demonstrated remarkable talent and dedication.
Cissokho’s amateur career is distinguished by numerous accomplishments on both national and international stages. He first gained significant attention in 2013 when he won the French National Championship, showcasing his skill and determination. This victory was a stepping stone that led him to compete in various prestigious tournaments. One of the highlights of Cissokho’s amateur career was his participation in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Competing in the welterweight division, Cissokho displayed impressive boxing skills and resilience. He advanced through the rounds, ultimately earning a bronze medal for France.
Professional Career
Souleymane Cissokho transitioned from a distinguished amateur career to the professional ranks with a debut fight on January 21, 2017, against Renato Goman at the Palais des sports Marcel-Cerdan in Paris, France. Cissokho showcased his power early, securing a first-round knockout victory. This impressive start set the tone for his professional journey, characterized by a combination of technical prowess and knockout power. Cissokho continued to build his record with a series of victories, displaying his skills against a variety of opponents. On June 2, 2017, he defeated Giorgi Kerdikoshvili by a third-round TKO at the Palais des Sports Porte de Versailles in Paris. He followed this up with another knockout victory over Dmytro Semernin on October 14, 2017, at the Zénith Paris. These early wins demonstrated his dominance in the ring and his ability to finish fights decisively.
One of his significant early achievements came on February 9, 2019, when he won the vacant French super-welterweight title by defeating Romain Garofalo with a third-round TKO at the Dôme de Paris. This victory was a stepping stone that propelled him to international competitions. On June 1, 2019, Cissokho fought at Madison Square Garden in New York City, securing a unanimous decision win over Vladimir Hernández, further establishing his reputation on the global stage. In 2021, Cissokho captured the WBA Intercontinental super-welterweight title by defeating Kieron Conway via split decision on May 8 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. He defended this title with a fifth-round TKO victory over Ismail Iliev on September 10, 2021, at Stade Roland Garros in Paris. These wins solidified his status as a top contender in the super-welterweight division.
Cissokho’s career reached another milestone on December 17, 2022, when he won the vacant WBC Silver welterweight title by defeating Thulani Mbenge via majority decision at the Parc des Expositions in Nantes, France. He successfully defended this title on November 4, 2023, with a unanimous decision victory over Isaias Lucero at the Casino de Monte Carlo Salle Medecin in Monaco.
