Early Life and Amateur Career
Shakhram Giyasov was born on July 7, 1993, in Bukhara, Uzbekistan. Growing up in a city known for its rich history and cultural heritage, Giyasov found his passion in boxing at an early age. Inspired by the success of Uzbek boxers on the international stage, he began training rigorously to pursue a career in the sport. His dedication and talent quickly became apparent, and he started competing in local and national tournaments, earning a reputation as a promising young talent. Giyasov’s amateur career is marked by several significant achievements on both the national and international stages. One of his earliest notable successes came in 2015 when he won a gold medal at the Asian Amateur Boxing Championships held in Bangkok, Thailand. This victory established him as one of the top amateur boxers in Asia and set the stage for his future successes.
The pinnacle of Giyasov’s amateur career came in 2016 when he represented Uzbekistan at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Competing in the light welterweight division, Giyasov showcased his exceptional skills and resilience, advancing to the final. Shakhram Giyasov transitioned to professional boxing on March 10, 2018, making a spectacular debut with a first-round knockout of Nicolas Atilio Velazquez at Kings Theatre in New York City. This explosive start set the tone for Giyasov’s professional career, where he quickly established himself as a powerful and skillful welterweight. His early fights were characterized by swift knockouts, including a first-round KO of Daniel Echeverria on July 14, 2018, in Los Angeles, and another first-round TKO of Miguel Zamudio on November 24, 2018, at Hard Rock Live in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Giyasov’s rise continued as he faced tougher competition. On February 23, 2019, he secured a fifth-round TKO against Edgar Puerta in Tijuana, Mexico. This victory paved the way for his first major title shot. On April 26, 2019, Giyasov fought Emanuel Taylor at The Forum in Inglewood, California, winning by unanimous decision to claim the vacant WBA International super-lightweight title. He successfully defended this title on August 24, 2019, with a first-round TKO of Darleys Pérez in Hermosillo, Mexico, showcasing his ability to dominate established fighters.
