Professional Career
Phumelele Cafu began his professional boxing career on May 26, 2018, with a promising debut victory over Phumelelo Maqolo at Town Hall in Dutywa, winning by TKO in the second round. His early career was marked by a mix of swift victories and hard-fought draws, showcasing his potential and resilience in the ring. His second fight, a draw against Landi Ngxeke on June 24, 2018, at Gompo Hall in East London, was a learning experience that would help shape his future performances. Cafu quickly rebounded from the draw, securing a series of impressive wins. On November 4, 2018, he defeated Thandolwethu Nkwenteni by TKO in the fourth round at the Indoor Sports Centre in Komani. He followed this with another TKO victory against Dalisizwe Komani on December 15, 2018, at Msobomvu Hall in Butterworth, further establishing his dominance in the flyweight division.
His ascent continued with a mix of victories and draws, culminating in a standout performance on September 28, 2019, where he claimed the vacant WBF International Flyweight title. Cafu’s corner threw in the towel in the fourth round, acknowledging his superior performance over Hamza Mchanjo at the Portuguese Hall in Johannesburg.
Cafu’s career saw a significant highlight on December 23, 2022, when he faced Jackson Chauke for the second time, this time securing a split decision victory at the Orient Theatre in East London. This win was crucial, as it followed their initial match on March 27, 2022, which ended in a majority draw. In 2023, Cafu continued to build on his success. On August 20, 2023, he defeated Genisis Libranza by unanimous decision at the Orlando Community Hall in Soweto, claiming the vacant IBF International Super Flyweight title. He finished the year with a first-round KO victory over Enathi Stelle on December 16, 2023, at the International Convention Centre in East London, winning the vacant South African Super Flyweight title.
