Biography
Professional Career
Donaire’s rise to fame began with his knockout victory over Vic Darchinyan on July 7, 2007, earning him the IBF and IBO flyweight titles. This win was a turning point, establishing him as a formidable force in boxing. He continued to build his legacy by capturing the WBC and WBO bantamweight titles in 2011, defeating Fernando Montiel with a spectacular second-round knockout. These victories highlighted his exceptional power and skill, earning him recognition as one of the sport’s elite fighters.
In 2012, Donaire’s dominance continued as he won the WBO super bantamweight title by defeating Wilfredo Vázquez Jr. He further unified the division by capturing the IBF title with a unanimous decision win over Jeffrey Mathebula. Later that year, he won the vacant The Ring super bantamweight title with a ninth-round TKO against Toshiaki Nishioka and defended his titles with a third-round knockout of Jorge Arce. Donaire’s career has been marked by significant rivalries and high-stakes bouts. In 2013, he faced Guillermo Rigondeaux, losing his WBO and The Ring super bantamweight titles in a unanimous decision. However, he rebounded with notable victories, including a knockout win over Vic Darchinyan in a rematch and winning the WBA (Undisputed) featherweight title against Simpiwe Vetyeka in 2014.
Despite experiencing setbacks, such as losses to Nicholas Walters in 2014 and Jessie Magdaleno in 2016, Donaire showcased his resilience by moving back down to bantamweight and winning the WBA (Super) bantamweight title in 2018 against Ryan Burnett. He continued to compete at a high level, reaching the finals of the World Boxing Super Series, where he lost to Naoya Inoue in a thrilling bout that earned Fight of the Year honors in 2019.
In 2021, Donaire won the WBC bantamweight title with a knockout victory over Nordine Oubaali, becoming the oldest bantamweight world champion in history at 38. He defended the title successfully against Reymart Gaballo later that year. Although he lost to Naoya Inoue in their rematch in 2022 and faced a defeat against Alexandro Santiago for the vacant WBC bantamweight title in 2023, Donaire’s career remains a testament to his skill, power, and enduring legacy in the sport of boxing.
