Professional Career
Luis Ortiz began his career with a series of impressive wins, quickly establishing him as a formidable force in the heavyweight division. Ortiz’s early victories, such as his TKO win against Lamar Davis in February 2010 and his subsequent win against Charles Davis in June 2010, set the tone for his career. He continued to build momentum with a series of decisive victories, capturing titles like the WBC FECARBOX heavyweight title against Kendrick Releford in August 2010. Ortiz’s career highlights include winning the WBA interim heavyweight title by defeating Matías Ariel Vidondo with a third-round knockout at Madison Square Garden in October 2015. He successfully defended this title against Bryant Jennings in December 2015, showcasing his power and skill with a seventh-round TKO. His victory over Tony Thompson in March 2016 further cemented his status as a top contender in the heavyweight division.
Despite his successes, Ortiz faced significant challenges. In March 2018, he squared off against Deontay Wilder for the WBC heavyweight title. Ortiz put up a strong fight but ultimately lost by TKO in the tenth round. He had another opportunity against Wilder in November 2019 but was again defeated, this time by a knockout in the seventh round. These bouts, though losses, demonstrated Ortiz’s resilience and ability to compete at the highest levels of the sport. Ortiz bounced back with notable victories, including a KO win over Alexander Flores in November 2020 and a TKO win against Charles Martin in January 2022. However, he faced a setback with a unanimous decision loss to Andy Ruiz Jr. in September 2022. Undeterred, Ortiz continued his pursuit of excellence, securing a TKO victory against Francisco Cordero in January 2024.
