Biography
Professional Career
Ponce made his professional debut on September 4, 2015, with a knockout win over Jesus David Barraza in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This debut set the tone for a series of victories that would define his early career, characterized by an aggressive style and knockout power. As Ponce progressed, he quickly established himself as a formidable competitor in the light welterweight division. His early fights were dominated by knockouts and technical knockouts, as seen in his victories against opponents like Lucas Gimenez and Adelio Samudio. These early wins underscored his potential and laid the groundwork for his ascent in the professional boxing ranks.
In 2017 and 2018, Ponce’s career trajectory took a significant upward turn. He captured the WBA Fedebol welterweight title with a first-round TKO over Martin Ariel Ruiz and successfully defended it multiple times. Notably, his victory against Damian Leonardo Yapur for the Argentina (FAB) light welterweight title further cemented his status as a rising star in the division. Ponce’s ability to perform on international stages was evident when he won the vacant IBF Inter-Continental light welterweight title in Naples, Italy, against Francesco Lomasto. This victory was a testament to his growing prowess and adaptability in different boxing environments. He continued to build on this momentum with wins over higher-caliber opponents, including a notable victory against Rico Mueller in Germany to secure the vacant IBO light welterweight title.
One of the highlights of his career was his fight against Lewis Ritson in June 2021 at the Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle, United Kingdom. Ponce delivered a decisive performance, winning by technical knockout in the tenth round, showcasing his endurance and skill in longer, more challenging bouts. However, Ponce faced a setback in February 2023 when he contended for the vacant IBF light welterweight title against Subriel Matías. In this highly anticipated match at the Minneapolis Armory, Ponce suffered his first professional loss when he retired in the fifth round.
