Professional Career
Ernesto Mercado has rapidly emerged as a formidable contender in the super lightweight division, demonstrating an impressive trajectory through decisive victories since his professional debut on July 31, 2021. Mercado’s early career was characterized by a series of emphatic wins, predominantly by knockout, showcasing his power and technical proficiency. Starting his career at the Cosmopolitan Lounge in Decatur, Mercado’s professional debut against Christopher Johnson ended in a second-round knockout, immediately setting a high standard for his ensuing fights. He continued this trend of early victories by knockout, rapidly dispatching opponents such as Nathan Benichou and Marc Misiura, both fights ending in the first round. These early successes quickly built his reputation as a strong power puncher within the boxing community.
Mercado’s capacity to handle more experienced fighters was tested and proven throughout 2022. Notably, his fight against Alfredo Rodolfo Blanco in August at The Hangar in Costa Mesa was a pivotal moment, with Mercado securing a second-round knockout. His consistent performance in knocking out well-regarded opponents like Daniel Evangelista Jr. and Jayson Velez further established him as a serious threat in the super lightweight division.
2023 was a significant year for Mercado, marking his presence on the international stage with multiple high-profile victories. His knockout win over Henry Lundy in just the first round at the LumColor “Phoenix Center” in Ontario demonstrated his growing dominance and ability to conclude fights decisively against seasoned boxers. This victory earned him the North American Boxing Association Super Light title, a significant milestone in his career. In 2024, Mercado continued his impressive streak, showcasing his skill and power in fights against Cristian Bielma and Deiner Berrio, with both matches ending in early knockouts.
