Fans Worry Over Spence Vs. Fundora - 'I Fear For Spence's Life'

Boxing fans have expressed their concerns after Errol Spence Jr. will reportedly fight Sebastian Fundora next year in Texas.

Spence would be having his first fight since getting knocked out by Terence Crawford in 2023. He was dropped three times before he was stopped in the ninth round as Crawford became the first Undisputed Welterweight Champion of the four-belt era. Spence took a lot of damage in the fight. He would subsequently undergo cataract surgery on his right eye. Spence blamed that as the reason why Crawford hit him on so many occasions.

Before the Crawford fight, Spence had also been involved in two car crashes. One of those car crashes involved a detached retina. There were suggestions that Spence was not the same fighter when he faced Crawford, as well as claims that he struggled to make the 147 limit. However, his eyes now appear on boxing at junior middleweight. Fundora holds the WBC and WBO titles at 154 pounds. He defeated Tim Tszyu in his last fight to pick up those belts. During his post-fight interview, Spence jumped into the ring to say that he wanted Fundora next.

However, Crawford is the WBO interim champion at 154 pounds. He also secured the WBA belt against Israil Madrimov in his first junior middleweight fight. That means Crawford is in line for a unification against Fundora. However, reports stress that Crawford has stepped aside, allowing Spence to face him. That has left Crawford with a few options. He could pursue Canelo Alvarez at 168 pounds and chase legacy. Alternatively, he could face the winner of Spence-Fundora in a massive unification.

There were suggestions that the result would have been different if the fight between Crawford and Spence took place at 154 pounds. However, fans are worried for Spence. He would be facing Fundora, who is a huge southpaw and a knockout artist. There is also no pressure on Spence to fight since he has already created his legacy. Spence is a former Unified Welterweight Champion with only one defeat in his career. He has also secured his financial future with the Crawford fight. He has also explored other ventures outside the ring.

Should It Happen?

He signed Frank Martin under his management company. Spence was on hand to promote him when he faced Gervonta Davis. While Martin was ultimately knocked out, Spence got a taste of what life was like in the promoting world. There are also worries that Spence may be biting off more than he can chew. This is his first fight at 154 pounds, and he faces one of the big hitters. There is an argument that he should have a tune-up fight against a less dangerous fighter.

Spence will also be having a new trainer in his corner. He parted ways with Derrick James after the Crawford loss. The pair are currently involved in a legal battle after James claimed he had not been paid fully for his services in relation to the Crawford fight. That has created a narrative that Spence could be putting himself at risk in this next fight. Boxing fans express their worries about that.
