Fans Troll Shakur Stevenson's Nickname 'Killer Kur' - 'He's Killing His Career'

Shakur Stevenson has been trolled for his new nickname, ‘Killer Kur’, following his decision to come out of retirement.

Stevenson has not had the best perception ever since his performance against Edwin De Los Santos. The 135-pounder won a unanimous decision win to earn the WBC Lightweight Title. The victory made him a three-division champion, but the manner of the performance was criticized. Shakur fought on the back foot, using his jab to negate De Los Santos.

That was partly due to a hand injury he had entering the fight. Boxing fans did not care too much, as they booed Shakur during and after the fight. He damaged his commercial value and the chance to secure a Gervonta Davis and Devin Haney fight. Things were then exacerbated as he was prevented from unifying.

Stevenson wanted to fight Emanuel Navarrete. But the WBO ordered the Mexican to fight Denys Berinchyk for the vacant WBO belt. This meant Stevenson had no fight planned for a belt as he retired. He regretted the decision, later reversing his retirement.

Shakur’s Style

Now, he has had a change of boxing style. The following footage shows him sparring in a southpaw stance. He has his sparring partner on the ropes, tagging him with a lead hook and an uppercut. Shakur then followed it up with a left hand that landed on the face. The post was captioned with the following.

“I’m gon’ introduce ya’ll to Killer Kur. #GtfOutMyWay.”

Lopez On Shakur

It is one thing doing it in sparring but another thing entirely doing it in the ring. Shakur is not known for being a front-foot fighter, often utilizing his defensive skills behind the jab to outdo his opponents. Teofimo Lopez recalled sparring with Shakur as he praised him for having a good jab.

But even with that, Lopez felt that Shakur was nothing special once the jab was neutralized. He questioned Shakur’s ability to take a shot, which would be tested at the highest level, especially if he desired to face knockout artist Gervonta Davis.

“Shakur is a very talented, skillful technique fighter. However, scared to get hit. Scared to get knocked out in front of the world. Does he have a good jab? Ya he does, but once you pass his jab it’s game (over). It’s food, it’s lunch food,” he concludes, using a metaphor to emphasize his point,” Lopez stated

But one thing in Shakur’s favour is that boxing is all about hitting and not getting hit. Although that may not appeal to fans, it has made him a three-division champion. If he can add more offense to his game and still keep his impressive defence, then there is a chance that he will become a complete fighter.

Floyd Mayweather mastered that, as he is defense was backed up by attacking offense to earn his opponent’s respect. That will be Shakur’s goal moving forward. But to achieve that, he may need the right dancing partner to bring the best out of him.
