Fans Rip Paddy Pimblett For Wanting To Fight Islam Makhachev

Paddy Pimblett has warned Islam Makhachev that his sights are set on him.

Pimblett secured his best career win, submitting Bobby Green at UFC 304 in his last fight. Paddy landed a triangle choke in the first round to secure a win over a ranked opponent. The victory meant he is now officially ranked within the UFC lightweight rankings. He took his undefeated record to 6-0, taking his overall MMA record to 22-3.

Islam is the current lightweight champion after submitting Dustin Poirier in his last bout at UFC 302. It was the third time Islam successfully defended the belt, making him one of the best P4P fighters out there. Islam reacted to Pimblett’s win, stating that they could face off if he continued beating better opposition.

Islam Vs. Pimblett

“When he deserve, why not? If he won couple next matches, when he’s gonna be in top 10, why not? … Now it’s all guys who are so dangerous,” Islam said

A fight, however, may have to be above the lightweight limit. Islam has said he wants a title at another weight class. He hinted at moving up to welterweight to chase Leon Edwards. Edwards was the champion before he lost to Belal Muhammad at UFC 304. Since Belal and Makhachev are on good terms, that fight is unlikely to happen. But if Pimblett can work himself into a title shot, then fans could see that bout.

“Did you see where Islam was talking about me the other day? He’s an exciting fighter’ and that. ‘If he keeps winning, you never know, he could fight for the belt,’ and that. You know Islam, we’re coming. We’re coming brother, we’re coming,” Pimblett reacts

Poirier Reacts

Makhachev is not the only fighter to have praised Paddy, One of Islam’s opponents, Dustin Poirier, also lauded him. Poirier knows what it takes to face Islam, having lost to him in his last fight, meaning he missed out on the lightweight belt for the third time.

Prior losses to Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira made that difficult to swallow. While Poirier is considering his retirement, Pimblett is coming into his prime. Poirier was impressed by what he had seen of Paddy in his win over Green.

“He’s another one of those guys whose trajectory is like, if he keeps doing what he’s doing, he’s going to be – not that he’s not massive, but he’s on the right track. When you talk like that and people like your personality, and you go out there and finish guys, you know, vets and legends like Bobby. Of course, going into the fight, I knew he could win, but to finish Bobby Green that way, I was very surprised. He’s talking the talk, walking the walk, man,” Poirier said

Dustin is still active, meaning he could even consider Pimblett an opponent if he cannot secure a title shot elsewhere. Alternatively, Pimblett may chase the title shot with Islam, as his massive following is enough to make that happen.
